Uris' best book. A taut novel of espionage and courage.

This is far and away my favorite Leon Uris novel. Unlike many of Uris' other works, this book is crisply written, the story moves at a fast pace, the ending is climactic, and the characters are vivid. The protagonist, Andre Devereaux, is unforgettable.
This is a novel essentially of the Cuban Missile Crisis. It also deals with postwar French foreign policy under De Gaulle (thinly disguised as "Le Croix" in the novel). The novel is told from the perspective of Devereaux, a French intelligence officer. Devereaux must deal with his knowledge of the Soviet activities in Cuba as well as Soviet penetration of the French government.
This is a fine novel. Unlike many of Uris' other novels, it does not bog down, and the characters behave like real people. There are no idealized characters--each person is shown complete with flaws and foibles. Recommended.

WELL DONE STORY..OF INTRIGUE.

What a wonderful novel this is. Again Leon Uris is able to make a good story great...this time we are brought into the world of espionage between, the Soviets, Americans and France. In a nut shell there is a great conspiracy brewing i.e. the Cuban Missile Crisis...but Uris goes a step further by saying that maybe the entire Crises was a hoax...dreamed up to get France to leave NATO and weaken the alliance....or is it? I must admit he is really able to keep the story moving along and does a great job creating mystery and intrigue. As you read you are never sure who is telling the truth and who is not...It really makes you bite your nails and question what you think is going on....that is a good story to me.

I feel they should re-release this novel because it is very indicative of our times now. A good read.

Enjoyed reading this book about the Cuban crisis in the early sixties. A fictional account of this time understood but it was a trying time and of interest. I like the way Leon has his characters portray events that could have happened or did happen depending on our knowledge of history. Will go on to read all his other novels, hope to accomplish that in my life time.

History of a Cultural Extinction

Slatta brings the Argentine gaucho alive in all his splendor and squalor. One gains an appreciation for the extraordinary lives of this equestrian people who almost literally lived in the saddle. The author depicts life on the pampa in sometimes searing realism: a hard, state-of-nature life, but one the gaucho himself would not have changed (and did not change at the few junctures where he had the chance).
Slatta presents a structuralist history of one of the W. Hemisphere's most colorful and renowned peoples. In other hands this approach might minimize the role of personality and personal choice, as though the gaucho bobbed helplessly on the rough seas of impersonal historical force acting thru the medium of latin culture.
Not so here. The author dispassionately shows that the gaucho's fierce independence and tribalism contributed directly to the demise of his culture in its collision with mainstream Argentine society on the pampa. It could not be otherwise. Modernity was simply incomprehensible to the gaucho. One could not be gaucho and latino at the same time, and civilization destroyed the gaucho way of life.
Slatta explores obvious parallels with other horse cultures such as that of the Mongols, the American Indian and the American cowboy. He demonstrates subject mastery in a wealth of detail concerning equipment, words, and convergent ways of handling similar challenges. The inherent drama of the gaucho story had echoes of "Monte Walsh" sounding in my mind as I finished the work.
This thoroughly readable book is enjoyable both as history and as entertainment.

A fine intro. to Argentine history for US readers.

Slatta's book works well when assigned to college undergraduates, because he covers complex and important issues in an engaging style. The subject of gauchos should be fascinating as well to lay readers interested in US cowboys & frontier history, because Slatta provides a clear basis for comparative history. 10-15 years ago it would have deserved a 5-star rating, but "Gauchos" has stimulated further research which is beginning to modify, or at least extend, its conclusions (cf. J. Lynch, "Massacre in the Pampas 1872"). Nevertheless, Slatta's book remains the place to begin expanding one's understanding of New World frontier history.

Not the best, but the good.

Good for preparing USMLE CK.

The questions are a little bit shorter and easier than those of UW. So it looks quite inappropriate to prepare the exam.

BUT!! As you know, studying with computer makes you do lots of worthless things - web surfing!!!. So it's better to read more B-grade questions than to read less A-grade questions.

So I recommend this for medical students.

From Flyaway

I can see a lake, surrounded by trees. My eyes scan the surface of the water, searching...

"Think there are any birds down there?" Harry says.

I cringe, wait for the teasing. But Harry keeps quiet, genuinely interested.

"Maybe," I say quietly. "It's a bit early for them yet."

I turn back to study the lake, and I see something. Just one. I can't work out whether it's a whooper or a mute. Its feathers look grayish and young. My breath catches in my throat as I think about that lone gray whooper flying away from the power cables that day...all on her own. Maybe it's her.

"What is it?" Harry asks.

"Just a swan."

This is a sweet and heart-wrenching book. Isla, the narrator has a compelling voice, and is very likeable- she is selfless, and her relationship with her family is very strong. Harry, the sick boyfriend, though really shines.
Their blooming relationship is innocent, and it is fun to watch it unfold. The loner swan brings them together and parallels their adventure.

The only thing I don't like is that it did not give me closure on whether Harry makes it through his transplant. But then again, sometimes the open ended ending really is the best, because you are always rooting for the patient to pull through and for the romance to continue, but as Lurlene McDaniel has proved, there is just something about death that can also make a perfect ending, because it is sad, beautiful, and reflects reality. But, I don't know about real statistics, but the book said 50/50 chance, so in the end it is left to the reader to decide, or you can take her dream of Harry being a swan and migrating as he didn't pull through, or you can find hope in his text and say that he did.

Exciting - I couldn't put it down!

I really like this book. It was so exciting and I couldn't put it down. The only reason I don't give it five stars is because I think Isla is too young to have a boyfriend. Sure, she can like boys, but not have them as boyfriends. It just sort of made me uncomfortable. But other than that, this was a very good book. I completely recommend it!
