About the Author
Jennifer Morgan’s work as a storyteller, author, educator and environmental advocate flows out of her love of the natural world and cosmology. As former director of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New Jersey, she started numerous educational and marketing programs for farmers and consumers, both locally and nationally. Currently she is an adjunct staff member at Genesis Farm, teaching the Sacred Universe Story. A portion of Ms. Morgan’s royalties from the sale of this book are donated to earth literacy centers. Her storytelling evolved from bedtime stories for her son who wanted to know more and more, even the texture of the edge of the Universe. She believes that our cosmology stories fundamentally shape us—our relationships, our work, our play, our culture, our institutions, our everything.
Dana Lynne Andersen, M.A., is a multi-media artist, playwright and teacher with degrees in philosophy and consciousness studies. Her paintings, often very large in size, explore the swirling forces of energy that underlie matter and seek to reveal life's numinous mystery. She believes that as our "depth perception" expands - billions of galaxies discovered in our lifetime! - it is also essential to expand perception inwardly to the vastness within. Introduction to Montessori's Cosmic Education

As a Montessori Elementary (ages 6 -9) teacher looking for a way to make Maria Montessori's "Great Lessons" come alive, this is a beautiful way to introduce the Cosmic Curriculum. The illustrations and art work are purely amazing. I am not a cosmologist and have very little astronomy or physics academic background, so I can't address the accuracy. Up until Stephen Hawking's, "A Brief History of Time" (published in 1988), this is perfectly in keeping with the scientific consensus up to that time. I do not know what theoretical evolution has emerged since then.
This is perfect for reading aloud to students at the beginning of the year, in order to spark the imaginations to explore further in astronomy, geology, physics, chemistry, meteorology, etc. etc. and onward and upwards! The only disappointment is that Jennifer Morgan only wrote three books and never finished the final two of Montessori's "Five Great Lesson." I hope she someday continues the series and writes two more books.

The story of you and me

I was a bit worried that my kids would not have the patience to sit through this book. It does use rather large words, but such is to be expected. I was glad that the three parts to this series were broken up to provide a break for young minds.
I was rather surprised, then, when my kids wanted me to read this book and then immediately go on to the second, and were disappointed because I had not yet ordered the third in the series (which I have just remedied). My 5 year old wanted me to read them both over again. We spent two solid hours on a Sunday evening reading these books together; eventually I was the one who told them that reading time was over.
The books tell the story of how the universe came to be, which is the same as how we came to be since we are part of the universe and the universe is not complete without us. The book may come across as "New Age" at times and at first I was not comfortable with the idea of a pre- Big Bang universe expressing dreams of what she may become. But it is used as a metaphor to show that the Universe could have turned out very differently than it did. These metaphors are quite appropriate for a children's book.
If you are looking for a book to help children with the abstract concepts of the formation of the universe, galaxies, matter, energy, stars, and the Earth itself, and if you also want that book to help children gain a sense of belonging to this great cosmic event and to think outside their own selves, then you can't do much better than "Born with a Bang."

Great way to Introduce the Big Bang!

This book is great. The pictures are beautiful and huge covering the whole page, which is pretty big. The story is great, easy to understand and cute, but importantly filled with so much information! They way the talk about the Big Bang in a bed time story way is perfect for kids who can't really grasp how big the universe is yet. In the back of the book is a few pages with real pictures and facts to go with it and better explain parts of the story. I can't wait to get the rest of the books!
