It's hard to like a book when you hate the heroine.

I did not enjoy this book at all. I really enjoyed Nora Roberts Land, but I have liked books two and three much less. To me, I hated Peggy. She was cold, scheming, vindictive, etc. I get that she was damaged by her previous marriage and her relationship with her father, but really- who behaves like that? How she had friends was beyond me.
Her character is completely unlikeable. It's hard to read and enjoy a story and hope for a happy ending where one of the main characters is a terrible person through 95% of the book. This is the last book in this series I will read.

Peggy was such an awful character it was difficult to get through this book

I rarely give books such a low rating. I really liked the first book in this series and enjoyed the second one. This one I had to struggle to finish. The main male character was a price charming type. And the main female character Peggy, was a nasty, negative woman without the ability to be decent to people. She treats Mac rudely through the entire book and he just keeps coming back for more. She is rude to her family and friends, calling her friend Jill names like moron and idiot. By the end of the book I was hoping for a plot twist where Mac leaves her and finds someone better. I don't understand why so many reviewers commented how much they disliked the character Peggy but gave it 4 and 5 star ratings. I most likely won't read the next book in this series because she kept mentioning how similar Abbie and Rhett (the characters in book 4) were to Mac and Peggy and I can't stomach another book like book 3.

Romance, mystery, intrigue add up to a most compelling read! My personal fav of Miles' Dare Valley series

The Grand Opening, the third book in Ava Miles’ Dare Valley series, was the first that I received to review (though I waited to read it until I finished books one and two) and is my absolute favorite of the series.
Yes, I wanted to know more about the new deputy sheriff in town, single mother and straight arrow, Peggy McBride. It was clear from their brief interactions in the previous stories that Mac Maven, whose plan to restore the old mountain hotel to its former glory includes top-level poker tournaments, and staunch anti-gambler Peggy have definite sparks flaring between them. So, I couldn’t wait to read “their” story.
Miles creates two wonderfully complicated and fascinating protagonists in Mac and Peggy. Long after I turned the last page and closed the book, I reflected on the challenges to their romance. The levels of trust and leaps of faith that each of them had to face. But most of all recalled the inspirational quality of their bond.
This is the book, to me, that showcases Miles as a writer. If you were to read no other book by her, choose this one. (And I’ll guarantee you’ll read all the others too.) After reading The Grand Opening, Ava Miles was added to my “must-buy” list and her books have a permanent home on my virtual shelf of treasured titles to reread.
Yes, The Grand Opening resonated strongly for me. Not just for all the points I mentioned, but also for the tightness of the story, the added mystery and intrigue, and for creating the character of Mac Maven, who has to be one of my favorite book boyfriends.
