Getting What you Want

Rachel Kramer Bussel gives us what we want in her new collection of quickies, Gotta Have It. When there isn't much time, you've got to be a real master--of seduction, of knowing how to give it and get it without the luxury of lavish foreplay. These masterful stories show that getting what you want isn't boring: go ahead, let the stranger in the library bend you over the desk and grope you under your skirt ("Special Collections" by Fiona Curtis); tie your straight office mate up with the phone cord and suck him off while making him watch you get hard ("Jarret" by Shane Allison). But it's not all getting and having--there is artful delay here as well, abundance tempered by longing. In "Genesis" by Shanna Germain - the erotic is in the waiting, as student must wait for teacher to say when. This doesn't mean he doesn't get what he wants, however--or that we don't--as Germain shows us the erotic in the waiting, the power of seduction. And in "Don't Struggle" by Valerie Alexander, we get the hot sex, the delivery, but the erotic is as much in what hasn't happened yet, the "little dependencies" that will begin off the page. The psychological dimension of binding another to you, or of being bound, is as much a turn on as a feverish kiss.

This book is hot. My only complaint is that getting what I want made me so greedy that I didn't want the book to end.

Fast and furious collection of 69 sizzling shorts

Erotica editor Rachel Kramer Bussel manages with each collection to come up with yet another fresh challenge to erotica writers - and readers. This time she has limited contributions to 1,200 words. "gotta have it" gives us the best 69 of what she calls "sudden sex." But sudden doesn't mean partial or limited - it means fast and furious and hot.

From an innocent junior librarian's introduction to bondage literature (Special Collection by Fiona Curtis) to a phone sex message that messes with a man's mind (Red Light by Angela Caperton), we get fully realized stories that excite the imagination and other organs. Perhaps my favorite is My Femme by Evan Mora about the narrator's boifriend whose vintage teal-blue Corvette, known as The Femme, becomes the setting for a wild session. One of the best written stories (Need-Leash by Mike Kimera) has a married woman catapulted into an affair with a cruel lover saying, "It is not the betrayal or humiliation or the crippling tug of my need-leash that brings the tears," but rather her fear that "one day you will let go of my leash."

This collection is different from many of the other dozens that Bussel has done for it is not aimed at one sexuality, one fetish or one sexual specialty. It is inclusive of the full menu of erotic surprises. It's a great volume to dip into for that quickie - either private or not. Best of all, Bussel has created an encyclopedic volume of these sizzling shorties that still fits conveniently in one hand.

He then joined George Wimpey Ltd and became a director of Wimpey Major Projects Ltd. I feel this product does a good job explaining intermediate microeconomics. Perloff has a good mixture of concepts and math with some good examples as well. The book also arrived in a timely fashion, which pleased me as well. If you're interested in Economics at all, you should buy this book.

It's hard to like a book when you hate the heroine.

I did not enjoy this book at all. I really enjoyed Nora Roberts Land, but I have liked books two and three much less. To me, I hated Peggy. She was cold, scheming, vindictive, etc. I get that she was damaged by her previous marriage and her relationship with her father, but really- who behaves like that? How she had friends was beyond me.

Her character is completely unlikeable. It's hard to read and enjoy a story and hope for a happy ending where one of the main characters is a terrible person through 95% of the book. This is the last book in this series I will read.

Peggy was such an awful character it was difficult to get through this book

I rarely give books such a low rating. I really liked the first book in this series and enjoyed the second one. This one I had to struggle to finish. The main male character was a price charming type. And the main female character Peggy, was a nasty, negative woman without the ability to be decent to people. She treats Mac rudely through the entire book and he just keeps coming back for more. She is rude to her family and friends, calling her friend Jill names like moron and idiot. By the end of the book I was hoping for a plot twist where Mac leaves her and finds someone better. I don't understand why so many reviewers commented how much they disliked the character Peggy but gave it 4 and 5 star ratings. I most likely won't read the next book in this series because she kept mentioning how similar Abbie and Rhett (the characters in book 4) were to Mac and Peggy and I can't stomach another book like book 3.

Romance, mystery, intrigue add up to a most compelling read! My personal fav of Miles' Dare Valley series

The Grand Opening, the third book in Ava Miles’ Dare Valley series, was the first that I received to review (though I waited to read it until I finished books one and two) and is my absolute favorite of the series.

Yes, I wanted to know more about the new deputy sheriff in town, single mother and straight arrow, Peggy McBride. It was clear from their brief interactions in the previous stories that Mac Maven, whose plan to restore the old mountain hotel to its former glory includes top-level poker tournaments, and staunch anti-gambler Peggy have definite sparks flaring between them. So, I couldn’t wait to read “their” story.

Miles creates two wonderfully complicated and fascinating protagonists in Mac and Peggy. Long after I turned the last page and closed the book, I reflected on the challenges to their romance. The levels of trust and leaps of faith that each of them had to face. But most of all recalled the inspirational quality of their bond.

This is the book, to me, that showcases Miles as a writer. If you were to read no other book by her, choose this one. (And I’ll guarantee you’ll read all the others too.) After reading The Grand Opening, Ava Miles was added to my “must-buy” list and her books have a permanent home on my virtual shelf of treasured titles to reread.

Yes, The Grand Opening resonated strongly for me. Not just for all the points I mentioned, but also for the tightness of the story, the added mystery and intrigue, and for creating the character of Mac Maven, who has to be one of my favorite book boyfriends.

A good, concise account of basic ethical ideas.

Ethics A Beginners Guide by Peter Cave is one of a series of Beginners Guides books. Cave is a lecturer in philosophy and provides a basic overview of various ethical perspectives in chapters on utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics, religion, and existentialism. The remaining chapters cover topics related to these ideas including whether morality is just an illusion, applying ethics to life and death situations, the rights of the state relative to the individual, and how to fit ethics into your personal life. Each topic is covered in enough detail to give you a basic understanding of the concepts for that particular philosophical position. At the same time the relative brevity of the book does not allow for any in-depth analysis and some of the examples are not particularly helpful. Still, this book can be a good beginning for anyone interested in learning more about ethics and moral philosophy.

Good Coverage,

Very interesting read and served as a great contextualizer. Its coverage is broad, touching upon everything from the British traditions, Structuralism, Marxism, Post-modernism, to discourses on Power, Gender and Sexuality and psychoanalysis in film. Because it's a book ultimately about popular culture, this sort of background seems tolend a refreshingly informed perspective to the subject matter, and Storey does an apt job as well of moving between the analytical underpinnings and their particular applications.

The first chapter had almost set me completely off the book however, with a rather lumbering attempt at delineating the various definitions of "culture" and "ideology" in a way that seemed to preclude synthesis by assigning the particularly nuances of each major author to completely separate categories.

I also found Storey's prose slightly uneven in a way that's difficult to describe. A lot of the author's he mentions write with a dense, steady, even flow that can seize a person into a bit of a flow-state, exhaustively touching upon various authors, attacking a problem from numerous perspectives, and slapping you straight into active reading mode -- filling you all the while with a treasure trove of new ideas. Frederic Jameson is a good example of this. As I read Storey, however, I at times felt my right-brain bits either snoozing off a bit or being rudely riled awake by the abrupt cut-off of an idea or concept that I thought could really have used just a sentence or two more. Could it just have been a subtle difference in the rhythms of American and British English?

In any case, that was just my personal qualm. Worth reading as an intro text for the coverage alone!

Great overview of cultural concepts

John Storey's Cultural Theory and Popular Culture: An Introduction (5th Edition) provides a well-rounded academic introduction to the concept of culture and the advent of "popular culture". Rather than seeking to examine unique facets of popular culture, Storey instead enters into the debate as to who should establish culture and the philosophical rationale for separating various forms of culture. Cultural Theory and Popular Culture is broken down into ten chapters:

1. What is popular culture?
2. The `culture and civilization' tradition
3. Culturalism
4. Marxisms
5. Psychoanalysis
6. Structuralism and post-structuralism
7. Gender and sexuality
8. `Race', racism and representations
9. Postmodernism
10. The politics of the popular

The book also looks at how culture is established and reality and the various models (such as educational "filtering") that are proposed as a means of ensuring that culture is controlled (in other words, Storey looks at the various efforts and theories which have been proposed as mechanism for conveying certain types of culture). After setting a foundation of understanding for how culture is established and controlled, Storey highlights the various models which are used to analyze culture.

I used this book as part of my sociology coursework in pop culture. I found the chapters on various models of analyzing culture to be the most useful. I will say that at times the reading can be somewhat dense and difficult to grasp during the first pass, but I found it to be more a function of the material rather than Storey's style of presentation. Overall, Storey presents a concise, approachable overview of culture. Excellent and clear introduction--a good foundation

When I was a grad student in anthropology, I needed to get up to speed in this field in a hurry. I bought the 1st edition of this book and read it quickly. I was very glad for the background in some basic field of cultural theory and popular culture.

While no means definitive, and probably debatable on a few points, this is a very effective way to quickly become familiar with the field. I recommend it to undergrads, grad students, and even to neophyte faculty in the field.

About the Author
With more than 35 years of experience in applied engineering in the aircraft and automotive industries, Vukota Boljanovic has performed extensive research in development and manufacturing engineering, including the impact of design modification on tools, dies, and processes selection, aircraft assembly and inspection. He received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and worked in Europe in both academia and industry -- as a Professor of Aerospace Engineering and as Vice President for Research and Development for an aircraft company where he oversaw industry and government funded research on a variety of manufacturing topics. The author of two books, including Sheet Metal Forming Processes and Die Design (Industrial Press, 2004) and numerous technical papers, Boljanovic has been recognized by the aircraft industry and academia for several of his contributions to manufacturing processes. Before recently retiring in Knoxville, Tennessee, he spent five years working in the American automotive industry.

Great beginners book for die making

I have minimal machining experience, mostly self taught, and this book opens up the process of creating a die extremely well. I have only gotten through a few chapters but the illustrations are very good, the text is easy to follow and clear.

Great book, from my admittedly novice point of view... but I have learned a lot.. and thats the point of this book.

Skip the Tintoretto

Rather than tackle Being & Nothingness (B&N) straightaway, the curious reader interested in exploring Sartre may find this volume a good introduction and preparation before deciding to take on B&N. In fact the first section of this book is actually taken from B&N. The Citadel Press version of B&N is definitely a more reader-friendly book than the Washington Square Press version: the type is cleaner and bigger; the paper is better quality; and the book is just overall better-looking. Unfortunately, it is an abridged version. One entire beginning section has been excised and placed into this volume as Section I. The rationale for this move (as far as I can tell) was that Sartre had republished this particular section at a later date in another volume of essays, incorporating some minor revisions. It amounts to some 60 or so pages of text. Citadel apparently chose to publish only the later version of the text in this volume of essays and cut it out of their edition of B&N. At any rate, reading this first section will give you a generous foretaste of B&N.

The second section is titled "A Sketch on the Theory of Emotions", an early essay that pre-dates B&N by some ten years. As Robert Solomon has written in his excellent book of essays, "From Hegel to Existentialism", this essay provides a comprehensive introduction to B&N in its own right, and is far clearer than the "oqaque" Introduction of B&N itself. It explains Sartre's theory of emotions, a theory he continued to hold throughout his life, even though he never got around to fleshing it out. (Incidentally, Solomon's book provides a penetrating critique of this essay, and is highly recommended.)

The third section is on mental imaging. I found this particular essay to be fascinating reading. It is an exploration of how the mind grapples with difficult concepts by creating mental images of them to help it conceptualize and assimilate them.

The final section of essays is on aesthetics, and was for me the most tedious and uninteresting of the lot. In particular the essay on the Renaissance painter Tintoretto was an absolute chore to read. Sartre psychoanalyses Tintoretto, and really seems to go over the top in analyzing his mind and historical situation. The essay seems to go on forever, is repetitious, and drifts aimlessly.

Jean Wahl's Introduction to Existentialism appears at the beginning of this volume. It was an address which he delivered to various professors in 1946. It is a gentle, sympathetic, non-rigorous introduction, covering all the major figures and themes. Wahl does an excellent job of explaining just what existentialism is. You will, for example, learn exactly what is meant by the phrase "existence precedes essence."

All in all, this book provides a great introduction to Sartre's writing.

Reminds me of those great Saturday morning Serials!

I've always liked the Seven Soldiers of Victory. They were more my style than the JSA. Sure I enjoyed the JSA, they had cool powers, everyone looked up to them and they saved the world once a month. But the 7SoV saved the world too. What I think I liked about them was the way they saved us. They didn't do it with super-speed,magic rings,Amazonian powers or a miracle pill. The 7SoV didn't really have any super-powers to speak of. Granted the Shining Knight had a flying steed named Winged Victory, a sword from Merlin that could slice through almost anything and a suit of armor proof against at least small arms fire. But that was it, that's all they had in the way of powers to give them an advantage over the bad guys. Unless you count the power of keen wits, iron fists and steely nerve. And heart, this team had an abundance of heart. They routinely went head-to-head with villains who, on paper, should have crushed them.

In this volume for example, they fight the Skull, a Fu- Manchu type mastermind, the wealthiest man in the world, who is "driven by a diabolically cunning, scheming brain that scoffs at justice and toys with murder, moving with a mastery over men and money unmatched by any other mortal!", the Triple Wizards of Wisstark, who throw giants, winged apes,invisible phantoms and blackest sorcery against the 7SoV and the Dummy, known as the Diminutive Desperado, Murderous Mannikin and Servitor of Evil who presides over a vast, world-wide criminal empire. Our heroes know they're up against it, and that makes them fight all the harder. They know they're the underdogs but they prevail in the end because they have heart. That's why I like them so much, they are the Rocky Balboas of super-teams. There are actually 8 of them and they are in brief:

The Crimson Avenger and Wing- Crimson Avenger is also known as Lee Travis, editor and publisher of the newspaper, The Global Leader. He's a two-fisted hyper athletic scrapper aided in his fight against evil by sleep gas capsules and his Chinese sidekick, Wing

The Green Arrow and Speedy- The famous battling bowmen used their mad archery skills to skewer crime. They seldom used trick arrows in these stories, except for their faithful arrow lines.

The Vigilante- A mysterious, kerchiefed, six-gun packing Cowboy hero who spoke in the most wonderfully cliched Western dialogue. He had a vey solid following among fans.

The Shining Knight- A guy named Justin, assistant curator at The Museum, who jousts crime with the strength and nobility of Camelot.

Star-Spangled Kid and Stripesy- Tropical fish enthusiast and rich boy Sylvester Pemberton and his much older sidekick/chauffer Pat Dugan tackle crime by calling out numbered combat maneuvers(Let's use k59, kid!) like they were football plays.

They appeared in Leading Comics and in volume 2 of their Archives they engage in 4 specific missions.

Leading Comics #5-The team wallops the Skull, world's wealthiest and most evil man. The Skull recruits some of the planet's finest criminal minds to steal various objects of wealth and power from around the globe!Should the Skull obtain these objects, it means "an evil destiny for law-abiding mankind." The 7SoV vow to give him what's comiing to him!

Leading Comics #6-A renowned archeologist enlists the 7SoV to recover the lost gold of the Incas so he can use it to help smash the Axis! This is quite an old fashioned adventure story wherein the intrepid band must unravel the meaning behind a cryptic poem to uncover the treasure. They run afoul of volcanoes, hidden caves,savage giant apes, ancient warriors and are manipulated into fighting each other by an "ingenious and diabolical villain who seeks to sow unsuspected death and destruction with a lavish hand."

Leading Comics #7-"Charity begins at home but it doesn't end there! From the star-studded stage of a great auditorium, a generous impulse lures the Seven Soldiers of Victory to an unknown lotus land beyond ice-capped peaks, where strange magic awaits them. And though a myriad of more menacing miracles lies ahead, the daredevil legionnaires, fearing neither man nor magician, plunge boldly forward, as with ever ready wits and matchless courage they answer the summons to mystery and danger from the Wizards of Wisstark!"

Leading Comics #8-The Murderous Mannikin known as The Dummy condemns the Seven Soldiers of victory to be Exiles in Time! He splits the brave crew up into smaller teams and scatters them throughout history. The Star-Spangled Kid and Stripesy are transported to the Northlands where they must contend with horned Vikings, Crimson Avenger and Wing are sent back to ancient China, the Vigilante does as the ancient Romans did, Shining Knight is the portrait of a hero when he meets Leonardo DaVinci and the Green Arrow and Speedy duel with the Three Musketeers! The cool cover features the 7SoV trapped in a cramped giant hourglass with The Dummy dressed in evening clothes leering menacingly over them.

Invest in the adventures of these rolicking, stout hearted cavaliers. They're full of action, imagination and Golden Age thrills.

The Retro Super Team collection Vol. 2

This is a well done collection of beautifully reproduced comics featuring the early and almost forgotten super hero team The Seven Soldiers of Victory. Many of these heroes have been all but forgotten and might have been were it not for the Cartoon Network's Justice League Unlimited who breathed new life into them by featuring virtually every hero and villain from the DC Universe.

Bear in mind, these stories are from the early days of comics, not the hard bitten noir-ish heroes of our cynical times. Still, their stories are emjoyable and filled with the sort of wonder that childhood once held in far less cynical times. A worthwhile addition to any serious collector's collection, the 7 Soldiers of Victory are a relic from a time when comics were all about fun and adventure.

I recommend this compilation, and I applaud DC for not letting them be forgotten.

Great book for managers AND investors

Value is one of the best books I've read that cuts to the core of how businesses should operate. It focuses the reader on the four ways that value is created and guides us through both business and market implications for companies who create value versus those that focus on the wrong things. Messrs. Koller, Dobbs and Huyett cover a number of topics that any business leader or investor would find useful.

The first part of the book identifies the four pillars of value and helps to answer the following questions:
1) When is growth or return on invested capital more important? How does each increase value?
2) How do you identify activities that add value versus ones either diminish value or shift risk around?
3) How do you spot a company on the wrong end of the "expectations treadmill" and what are the implications?
4) How can you take advantage of the "Best Owner" principle? What are the implications for M&A?

In the second part of the book, the authors break down the stock market in aggregate. They help the reader understand how the market works, compare the link between interest rates and inflation with P/E performance over the last 100 years, model the stock market and explain where and why stock market bubbles occur. Next, they discuss the problems with earnings management and show what a poor job "consensus earnings" do at actually forecasting the future. Their message to managers is just don't do it.

In part three, the authors dive into value creation and discuss what drives return on capital. They break down return on invested capital by industry segment from 1965-2007 and provide the reader with insights into why some industries perform better than others. For investors, this segment is particularly interesting as the book explains that the ROIC advantages or disadvantages of specific industries tend to be sticky meaning we should expect those with an advantage to retain it barring any major structural shifts. The book then explores growth, discusses why growth is difficult to sustain and reviews how different types of growth are rewarded in the market.

The book discusses the following concepts in great detail including portfolio theory (The Business Portfolio ch. 12), M&A (ch. 13), risk (ch. 14), capital structure (ch. 15) and investor communications (ch. 16). These sections all offer insight and pose questions that will make managers rethink how they address these topics. With portfolio theory, the authors explain how the best owner principle should drive what businesses a company operates. In M&A, the book takes a look at what makes a good versus bad acquisition. In risk, the reader gets help thinking through external risks and how to help manage these risks. Chapter 15 discusses capital structures and how companies should think through their debt-to-equity mix, identify the "savings" from debt versus equity, and discuss how to return excess free cash flow to investors. In chapter 16 the authors explore investor communications in detail and describe what types of activities are helpful versus those that do not add much value.

The book closes out with a final chapter, entitled Managing for Value, that provides the "so what" of the topics discussed. It provides guidance for how managers and boards should use the four pillars of value to help guide decisions and identify the right activities to undertake to maximize value creation.

I recommend that you read this book if you want to improve your decision making as a manager or board member. You should also read this book if you want to better identify activities that should create value as an investor.
