Excellent book!!!!

This book is truly a treasure. Brilliant. It has it all: superb and down to earth advice, inside information that is rarely taught to students directly; it includes a sweet, short and completely honest point of view of what to expect as a PhD student/candidate, and what you can do to improve your skills and progress while in the program.

It's a very reader-friendly book, incredibly inspiring. Each sentence in this book is full of wisdom. I have read several other books about how to succeed in your PhD program (300-400 pages); on which you basically have to look for the diamonds among the coals. This can be very time consuming. (PhD students don't have the luxury of time!). That does not happen with Dr. Akula's book. He respects your time, and goes directly to the point.

I really enjoyed this book and definitely highly recommend it. It spoke to my mind, soul and heart. I felt refreshed after reading it. I just feel ready to reach the next level! Thanks so much, Dr. Akula. Thank you.

A "holy grail" read for aspiring scientists

I am fortunate enough to be pursuing my PhD in Biomedical Sciences under the mentorship of the acclaimed Dr. Shaw M. Akula. "A Guide to PhD Success" is an "easy-read" self-help book targeting those students who may be interested in pursuing graduate studies in a science related field. The book contains useful tips/pointers/explanations, explores many different scenarios that students may face, and expresses personal views from a professor who wholeheartedly wants to see young minds excel in the sciences. I personally feel that this book would have been a great tool to have during my undergraduate career when I was a biology major interested in science but did not know all of the available academic and career options at the time. Honestly, after undergrad, I must attribute much of my success as a student to Dr. Akula and his teaching methods because prior to meeting him, no one had ever told me the TRUTH about what to expect in regards to pursuing graduate studies. Thankfully via his tutelage, I attained my Master's in Molecular Biology & Biotechnology in 1.5 years and I hope to earn my doctorate with ease as well.

Interesting and disturbing

I'm not sure quite how to review this book- it got under my skin a bit and that's kind of hard to get over. I struggled to get through it wondering if it should be considered blasphemy or not.
The premise of the book is that Mack, the main character, struggles after his youngest daughter is kidnapped, abused, and assumed dead. She was taken to a shack found deep in the woods where they found her blood and dress but not her body. Mack deals with deep depression (understandably so) after the event. Then one day he is given a note from God to visit Him in the shack. As the book unfolds, Mack describes in detail his experience in the shack with God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. My issues with the book are all doctrinal - I know God has a body and He does not take on whatever form suits Him in the moment. The initial physical representation of God was extremely disturbing for me and irritated me to the point of putting the book down for a time. The words that came from God and Jesus were not in line with what the Scriptures teach us and that bugged me too. I felt like there were some good messages here and there as Mack struggled to forgive God and trust in Him again, but there were so many things that went against my beliefs that I found the good messages lost in the sea of borderline blasphemy. Yes I know this is a book of fiction, but I still think that the "teachings" of this book are inaccurate.

Especially meaningful to those that see God as stern or far-away, but doesn't replace actual disciplined study of the bible

This is an allegory about the nature of God and His relationship to Man, similar in kind to “The Pilgrim’s Progress” by John Bunyan. As with all allegories, it can enlighten truths in a short paragraph that may not be understood in a long chapter of theology. Unfortunately, allegories also have the weakness of being like a “graphic novel” compared to a true novel, simplifying or paraphrasing original material (in this case, the Bible) to the point of distortion.

- The “romping” good humor of the Trinity for each other and Man was over the top for me. There was no room for “Fear of the Lord” in this story, at all.
- No real iscussion of hell, except to say God wants us all to be with Him.
- Some minor eco-babble, man-bashing, use of the math concept of “fractals”, etc. were annoying.
- Some, mostly minor, points of theology were just wrong in my opinion.

I think this book would be especially meaningful to those that see God as stern or far-away, or for those that carry anger/resentments for wrongs done to them. So, this book can take its place with other recent Christian-pop books like “Wild at Heart” and “A Purpose-Driven Life” that have proven meaningful to some. Just don’t make the mistake that it replaces more disciplined study of the scriptures and serious books of theology that illuminate a greater portion of the Word. If asked to defend your faith, or wondering yourself wht the scriptures say about a topic, you can’t say, “I read something about that in ‘The Shack!’” On the other hand, allegories are the equivalent to parables, and we know Someone that was pretty effective in using those to teach deep concepts through illustrations.

Gut wrenching storyline

Spoiler alert: A lot of people really love this book. It was well written & the author went into great detail to explain his perception of God. If you believe in an invisible force that contains pure love, does not judge & only wants your love in return, then this book is for you. It seems I am not there yet. I could not get past the death of an innocent child at the hands of a serial killer even though the main character is released from the great sadness of losing his previous child by forgiving her killer. I was depressed for days after reading this story. I understand the concept that forgiveness can release victims from the negative emotional attachment to their agressors. Maybe if I also had the experience of actually meeting God in his three forms in person, I too would come to understand more fully the meaning of unconditional love. In the meantime, I will continue living my life by being as kind as I can be to all I meet. However, if I were to meet anyone abusing a child, I might just feel the need to kick them in their private area, then call the police.
