BRILLIANT open-ended exploration linked through multiple books

I am delighted to see this series back in print! This book series evokes the same feeling in me as do sandbox-style computer games like Morrowind or Oblivion--done with captivating descriptions and an enchanting storyline. Of all the gamebooks I've played, I find this series the most rewarding. Feels much, much more like a WORLD than a regular choose your own adventure book or other gamebooks do. (If anything, its combined text format and vast openness of play echo the good old days of text adventure games from Infocom like Zork and Enchanter.) I'm buying multiple copies as gifts for friends this Christmas to help ensure that all twelve books come out!

It's like an MMORPG in a book

I'm glad to see the Fabled Lands series in re-print. With eBay as my primary expensive source of replacement for my over-used, drink-stained, eraser-ridden, original copies, I became hesitant to open up my old books. Now that they are back, I didn't hesitate to scarf them up off of Amazon.

This book series really shines when you have more than one, since they are all connected areas of the same world. It is much more than any typical "Choose Your Own Adventure" book in that you are free to roam the world at your leisure. There aren't many gamebooks that fit this bill. Tunnels & Trolls solitaire adventures are the closest I can recall. Completing quests, leveling up, finding treasure, hunting monsters, getting rich with trade, arranging a resurrection (i.e. respawn/binding point), and changing the local plot hooks make the Fable Lands feel like an MMORPG in a book.

One of the great things about this first book is that it already presents you with quite a lot of quests that can be completed without any of the other books, and at least one of these is directly related to the future of that land. It's also a fairly sizable kingdom to explore that won't always instantly kill your character out right, though this could still happen. A great introduction to the series that gives you plenty to do and experience in all areas of gameplay. The replay value is extremely high since there are multiple character classes to play, each having their own unique quest, and there are so many events and locations that could be missed whether your character dies or not. This book is really inexpensive, so I recommend buying the rest of the series when they become available.

A chance to collect all the books!

I remember back as a teenager my brother and I were spending a couple of weeks in Ireland with our mother's family. In a book store we were all offered the chance to choose one book each. My brother and I both chose volumes 1 and 2 of the "Fabled Lands" series. It was both a wonderful and a poor choice. Wonderful because Patrick and I spent the next couple of days glued to the couch with pencils and dice and enjoyed hours of exploration... only feeling disappointed when we got to a point that gave us the option of jumping into some of the other books we hadn't purchased. So why did I say these books were a poor choice? My mother and uncle had to leave my brother and I at home. We refused to go out and enjoy the Irish countryside and beaches because we'd have to pry ourselves away from these books! In retrospect I wish I'd saved the books until we got back to the states to start. *Laughs* That said, my only complaint was that the books were too good to put down. Once we got back to the States we were unable to find copies of the series (in the pre amazon/internet) days. Finally my brother and I will be able to buy more of the books and enjoy the rest of the game worlds. Please show support for the series by purchasing the first few volumes of the series so that the rest of it will be either re-released... or in the case of later books in the series that were planned, but cancelled before ever being printed, printed for the first time! If you are a gaming parent who has children who enjoy Choose-Your-Own-Adventure style books, this is the perfect next step in their gaming initiation.

My mom is a pediatric nurse, and I've found that much of the time, the pediatrician will have you bring your child in only to do nothing and have you either watch and wait or use something over the counter. So, now you've exposed your child to more germs by taking them in, and you've spent money you didn't need to spend. This is a great book for those who want a common sense approach to things that may pop up for babies and children. It is not a great book for those who want a medicine or procedure for everything or who think doctors are all gods that want to help everyone out of the goodness of their hearts.

Great resource

This is a great book. We are first time parents looking to do things in a more natural way and this book along with research really helped us be more confident in our decision. The book is laid out in a great format where you can refer back to subjects as they arise and make a informed decision. I would recommend it to new parents and ones who just want to take their children's health more into their own hands with confidence.

Wish I read this earlier!

This was recommended to me by my chiropractor when I was pregnant with my first child. I didn't read it until after my third baby, and wish I listened earlier! There is so much good information regarding basic child rearing without the overuse of your pediatrician and medications. Still pertinent to this era despite being written a few decades ago.

About the Author
Bruce Timm is an Emmy Award-winning artist, writer, director and producer who has been working in the animation field for nearly three decades. The majority of his career has focused on the DC Animated Universe for Warner Bros. Animation. His contributions include key roles working on the TV series Superman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, Batman Beyond and Justice League. Timm has served as producer or executive producer for over a dozen animated films, including Wonder Woman, Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, All-Star Superman and Batman: Year One.

STERANKO is one of the most controversial figures in contemporary culture, with multiple careers as an author, designer, musician, photographer, carnival fire-eater, publisher, male model, art director, escape artist, and illustrator. He created the first Modern Graphic Novel; collaborated with Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, and George Lucas on some of their biggest hits; and, with Stan Lee, is critically acclaimed as one of the prime Architects of the Marvel Age of Comics.

Excellent version, bit smaller, some content missing

I own both the original and this pocket version. The differences between the two are that the pocket version is a bit smaller and that some pages that featured licensed comic characters were omitted to avoid licensing fees so this pocket version could be offered at a more affordable price.

That said, the paper quality is the same so the color reproduction is great. The larger page size of the original version is certainly nicer, feels more like viewing a portfolio. If having the extra comic book characters and the larger size are important to you, track down the original. The prices have gone quite high on it, but I think its worth it for die hard Timm collectors like me. Actually the die hards will own both. I will look most at this pocket version to to keep the larger version in nicer condition.

Either way this pocket version is a must have. The only downside is it might wet your appetite for the larger form. I uploaded a photo comparing the size.

Don't let the "pocket edition" fool you. This is a large, gorgeous book. If you're a fan of pin up artwork at all this is an invaluable addition to your library.

Well put together

BT has compiled a visual array of beauty and art into an amazingly detailed and artistically precise book of work here. I find his work to be nostaligic yet modern in color and presentation. I loved seeing the famous renditions of movie posters and theater sets, a grand visual for the art afficionado. I look forward to whatever else I can find on his level.

Keeping it fresh in the classroom.

This is a fantastic book for anyone who is using the google classroom program. Technology has come along way in my lifetime. I wish that this had been created when I was in school. (Computers were not even around when I was in grade school). This is an easy step by step guide. To use this google classroom, your school must be enrolled in the Google Apps for Education (GAFE) program. I think every school should have some kind of program like this. It is great for teachers, students and parents. All assignments and class information can be looked at 24/7. Say your child is in grade school and has been out ill. A parent can log in and get classroom assignments and communicate with the teacher. Each teacher can customize the site to what is pertinent to their classroom. This program can also allow students to communicate and post information. Everyone learns in different ways. This is a great resource for our future techinical generation. We, as parents, grandparents and educators must keep up with new technology or we will be left behind!

There has truly never been a more difficult time to be a teacher. It covers literally everything you would need to know, from posting class assignments to managing your students and their grades. Hopefully this guide will make a difficult job a little easier.

The book is in many ways a diary written during hectic travels through war torn northern Syria so understandably it is a little disjointed. However, once you read it for what it is, it is a compelling and thought provoking narrative. The people she interviewed spoke under severe conditions and did so because they thought she would get their messages to the outside world but it is unclear what they wanted the outside world to do in response. Most want desperately to get rid of Assad but there is a wide variety of opinions on what should happen next. The author is brave, bright and articulate. She should now write a book describing what the oppressed Syrian people want from the rest of the world.

Also, I initially complained when this book did not arrive as promised. Wordery, the distributor, apologized and quickly sent the book.

Samar details through her own experiences and her interviews with combatants the course of events that have lead to the atrocities that still unbelievably continue relentlessly today. This is a compelling book that is pretty hard to read as the situations described are horrendous.

Samar Yazbek's journalistic record of her three crossings from Turkey into war-torn northwestern Syria provides stark descriptions of daily life under bombardment by the Syrian government, the plethora of Syrian rebel groups fighting the Assad regime, Syrian civilians defending themselves against criminal gangs bent on rape and pillage, and foreigners who swarm into Syria to establish a criminal, pseudo-religious empire. Yazbek interviewed a wide variety of Syrians, including women and children, who try to live amid the terror. Yazbek lays waste to any notions that putting a stop to the carnage will be simple. Read this and help a refugee to safety!
