Wonderland: A Photographer's Journey in the Bisti (Photo (Paperback))From Brand: New Mexico Magazine

Called a poet of the visual image, Eduardo Fuss has photographed in his native Argentina, Spain, and all across North America. However, the Bisti Wilderness in northwest New Mexico, near Farmington, has inspired his most striking photographs.

In 1966, Fuss settled in the United States in Seattle, Washington. He soon traveled across his newly adopted country, working in New York and Connecticut as a painter and curator. In the late 1970s, he returned to the West, traveling through New Mexico, a land that had been instilled in his childhood memory by John Ford westerns and an Ansel Adams photograph of the moon hanging over a village called Hernandez. He bought a camera to capture the light and shadow and mountains of New Mexico.

He found the Bisti Wilderness irresistible. Once, when he was there to shoot, high clouds formed. When a thin line of empty sky appeared on the horizon, he set up his equipment. "Suddenly a shaft of light appeared, the clouds providing a tremendously black background. I got two rolls of incredible, vibrant pictures. Mostly I just work with what is there--rarely is nothing there. Once you start looking, you find different ways to do things."

Throughout his career Eduardo has used natural light, one camera, a Canon, and one film, Fuji Velvia ASA 50, to take his photographs. His artistry comes with patience, with waiting for the shot. Lately he has been excitedly exploring the possibilities of combining his transparencies with computer capabilities to make sure his prints reflect what he saw, what he perceives as the emotions of the earth itself.

Wonderland is right.
By Glenn Hanson
I somewhat regret that since I purchased this book Planet Bisti is being visited far too much. When I first went there it was seen by a few hundred people a year. With the advent of Flickr and sites like it more and more people are trekking this magical area. I only pray they are careful and keep an eye on their children. Hundreds of formations are delicate and many are only a few inches high! Walk carefully please.
I made a trip out once solely to watch the full moon rise at apogee and t was all I had hoped. This author shows the love he has for this other worldly area and truly I can see how he could spend a lifetime photographing it. The book is well done and his images are magic yet not over the top.

Vision and Leadership (Meotzar Horav), by Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik

"Soon after the revelation at Sinai, the Jews committed the sin of the Golden Calf. We should note that prima facie this sin was more abominable, more horrible, than the sin of the Tree of Knowledge. IF we translate it into halakhic terms, the sin of the Tree of Knowledge consisted in eating forbidden foods, while the sin of the Golden Calf touched the very essence of Judaism, namely, the prohibition against idolatry. Yet, when Adam ate from the Tree of Knowledge, all future generations were struck by disaster. Adam alienated himself from his Creator and was driven out of Paradise. According to Hazal, God had intended for man to live forever, but the original sin brought about death and man became mortal. When the community alienated itself from the Creator by worshipping the Golden Calf, the consequences of the sin were not as tragic." ~ excerpted from Vision and Leadership

Vision and Leadership, the eleventh in the series MeOtzar HoRav: Selected Writings of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, presents Rabbi Soloveitchik s reflections on biblical narratives and characters, beginning with the Joseph stories and the Jewish people s sojourn in Egypt and ending with the story of Moses death on the brink of return to the Promised Land. Through careful exegesis of the verses, illuminating analyses of character, and insightful readings of midrashim and classic medieval commentators, the reflections in this book seek the underlying messages of biblical stories and an understanding of what they teach us about past and present events in the life of the Jewish people. They also shed light on broader concepts, such as the nature of justice, idolatry, spiritual authority, and halakhic thought.

Review
With this 11th installment in the series, Soloveitchik s previously unpublished material on biblical luminaries Joseph and Moses comes to light. Shatz, Wolowelsky, and Ziegler combed through the treasure trove of manuscripts, tapes, and lectures left by the Rav, as Soloveitchik was affectionately called by his students, to arrange this meticulous collection of thoughts and insights. In it, Soloveitchik shares his analyses of Joseph as dreamer and ruler; his assessment of Joseph s father Jacob/Israel as both subservient and powerful; and the roles Moses played as judge and king, among other topics. As with his other works, the Rav s erudition is evident, and the personal stories that are woven into his biblical exegesis reinforce his assertion that the Bible s stories and its layers of interpretation have informed the psyche of the Jewish nation throughout history and still resonate today. Bible scholars and followers of the Rav will certainly appreciate this important volume. --Publishers Weekly

Rav Soloveitchik s incredibly creative and insightful portrayals of biblical personalities, the events of their lives, and the applicability of these ideas to the contemporary reader, provides a great deal of fresh and profound fodd for thought even for those who view themselves as deeply familiar with Joseph and Moses. A leitmotiffor which the Rav is well-known is the exploration and application of the concept of Hegel s conception of the dialietic, i.e., the intersection of a thesis with an antithesis to produce a synthesis, and Vision and Leadership offers numerous examples of how this idea lies at the heart of biblical situations and Jewish approaches to life. Examples of dialectical discussion in the book include: a) confronting evil in order to appreciate the good; b) dreaming vs. practical application; c) dignity of man vs. the need for sacrificial action; d) clear understanding vs. confusion and mystery; and e) holiness deriving from the chosen community vs. the uniqueness of every individual....
In order to illustrate many of his points, R. Soloveitchik draws from personal experience, recalling the lesson of an impactful teacher, his grandfather R. Chaim s way of dealing with people, and aspects of his own personality wich he struggled to overcome.
Finally, the Rav pithily formulates his approach regarding how even the most traditional Jew must engage with the greater world: We demand of man complete involvement in all worldly affairs. We equate withdrawal from the world and society with cowardice and warn against it. Our philosophy preaches activism, aggressiveness, and articulateness.... --Jewish Book Council

About the Author
Rabbi Soloveitchik (1903-1993) was not only one of the outstanding talmudists of the twentieth century, but also one of its most creative and seminal Jewish thinkers. Drawing from a vast reservoir of Jewish and general knowledge, the Rav, as he is widely known, brought Jewish thought and law to bear on the interpretation and assessment of the modern experience. For over four decades, Rabbi Soloveitchik commuted weekly from his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, to New York City in order to give the senior sh iur (class in Talmud) at Yeshiva University s affiliated Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS), where he taught and inspired generations of students, among them many of the future leaders of all areas of Jewish communal life. By his extensive personal teaching and influence, he contributed vitally to the dynamic resurgence of Orthodox Judaism in America.

Rabbi Soloveitchk's views about Joseph and Moses
By Israel Drazin
This is the latest of the so-far eleven posthumous writings of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik (1903-1993) based on writings he did not publish. This one contains a dozen essays on the biblical Joseph and Moses that were taken from various writings and notes by the rabbi, which were edited and assembled in this book.

Rabbi Soloveitchik's interpretations of the biblical events surrounding Joseph and Moses were derived from his understanding of how to read the Torah. He follows the view of the Talmudic sage Rabbi Akiva and not that of his colleague Rabbi Ishmael. Rabbi Akiva felt that since the Torah is divine, no word or letter is superfluous. Each has meaning, and people must mine the Torah text to find this meaning even though the meaning is not explicit in the words or letters. Rabbi Ishmael felt that the Torah is intended for humans and was composed in language that people could understand. Thus, just as people repeat themselves for emphasis or to enhance the poetry of what is said, so too does the Torah, which "speaks in human language."

Rabbi Soloveitchik also, like Nachmanides, but unlike Maimonides, took the homiletical messages in Midrashim literally and seemed to accept as true the mystical notions in the thirteenth century Zohar, including its teachings about the sephirot, because he frequently quotes this book. He also believed that God is present in this world and causes people to act in ways he wants them to act. Thus, the essays about Joseph and Moses do not attempt to reveal the plain meaning of the biblical tales, but are homiletics, sermons that express his view of Judaism.

Rabbi Soloveitchik, for example, states that the confrontation between Joseph and his brothers was "not jealousy" but "a lack of appreciation (of) the sense of unity that members of a family feel for each other." The brothers "were taken aback (by Joseph's dreams, because Joseph) placed himself and them within a different society, not a pastoral but an agricultural one." Joseph had concerns that did not bother his brothers. He feared "the complete disintegration of the covenantal community founded by Abraham." Joseph also had a vision of "exile in Egypt.... They would have to live in a cruel land run by a dictatorial Pharaoh." He had "a feeling of doom." It was God who "arranged for Joseph to be introduced to Pharaoh.... Joseph's stay in Egypt was predestined and planned to the minute by the Almighty." Unstated in the Torah, Joseph explained to Pharaoh that "man's conquest of nature brings him not only blessings but distress as well." Joseph did much for Egypt. Among other contributions, he introduced "a rationing system" in Egypt. Later, when Joseph and his brother Judah discussed the future of their brother Benjamin, whether Joseph should enslave him for stealing his cup: "Intuitively, they (the brothers) felt that the controversy did not revolve about their brother Benjamin, but about Jewish historical destiny, that is, about whose descendants would be the King Messiah - Joseph's or Judah's." Jacob came to Egypt to reunite with his son Joseph and lived in Egypt until he died for seventeen years, the same amount of time that Joseph lived with him until his brothers sold him into slavery. Jacob had to be in Egypt for this time to imbue Joseph "with the morality and piety of Abraham."

Joseph asked Jacob's descendants to take his body to Canaan when they left Egypt. Moses "carried Joseph's coffin on his shoulders for forty years." Moses forgot his past, including his religion, during the many decades that he lived with his wife in Midian "because he wanted to forget." We must never give up hope about non-observant Jews; there is a chance the person will return to Judaism. The vision of the burning bush that Moses saw shows that Jews are indestructible. "Pharaoh's tolerance (of Moses) is one of the greatest miracles in the story of the Exodus!" The people of Amalek attacked the Israelites when they left Egypt, but "it was not a war against the ex-slaves; it was, rather, a war with the God of Israel."

Rabbi Soloveitchik also states that the first human Adam had many children during the 130 years between the birth of Cain and Abel and the birth of Seth. These children "did not bear the `image of God,'" only the descendants of Seth, "in other words, not all humanity was necessarily created in the image of God." This image is "a challenge to which man is supposed to respond, a destination toward which one may journey, an ideal to be realized." Those who fail to live up to this ideal, who reject the burden, who decline the responsibility, are like Adam's descendants before Seth was born, "aboriginal" people "of chaos and darkness."

"Judaism," Rabbi Soloveitchik writes, as Maimonides before him, "insists that man develop his potentialities to the fullest. The Torah encourages man to think, to work, to learn, to improve and perfect himself and his environment, and to intervene whenever necessary in natural processes, if such interference will contribute to the self-realization of man. God purposely did not complete the world." God left "man an opportunity to join Him in His creative gesture and become a co-participant in the mysterious act of continuous creation."

Puts you in the presence of one of the world's greatest teachers and scholars
By Don E
The insights the Rav gives on the character of Joseph and Moses is inspiring and unique. To be in the presence of a great mind and a great spirit is well worth the price. The Rav's take on these two seminal giants of Judaism is instructive and provides a somewhat different perspective from the standard interpretations.

Good, but tedious politics
By Decidion
Pretty good overview of a variety of renewable energy systems. Certainly enough to get you started and then you can delve in more deeply on specific systems you are interested through other resources (but it will give a good foundation so you really understand what will and won't work for you). The only negative is that I could do without the author's very obvious political slant... had I wanted to read about that over and over (throughout the book), I would have chosen some other material.

From Chapter 1

There could have been prophecy in the storm that blew up at the time of Julia's birth.

May month was not a time for heavy gales, but the climate of Cornwall is capricious as any child ever born. It had been a kindly enough spring, as kindly as the summer and winter that had gone before it; mild, soft, comfortable weather; and the land was already heavy with green things. Then May broke rainy and gusty, and the blossom suffered here and there and the hay leaned about looking for support.

On the night of the fifteenth, Demelza felt her first pains. Even then for a while she gripped the bedpost and thought the matter all round before she said anything. All along she had viewed the coming ordeal with a calm and philosophical mind and had never troubled Ross with false alarms. She did not want to begin so late. Last evening she had been out in her beloved garden, digging round the young plants; then as it was going dark she had found a disgruntled hedgehog and had played with him, trying to persuade him to take some bread and milk, and had only come in reluctantly as the sky clouded and it went cold.

This now-this thing in the middle of the night-might yet be only the result of getting overtired.

But when it began to feel as if someone was kneeling on her backbone and trying to break it, she knew it was not.

She touched Ross's arm and he woke instantly.

"Well?"

"I think," she said, "I think you will have to fetch Prudie."

He sat up. "Why? What is it?"

"I have a pain."

"Where? Do you mean..."

"I have a pain," she said primly. "I think twould be as well to fetch Prudie."

He climbed quickly out of bed, and she listened to the scratch of flint and steel. After a moment the tinder caught and he lit a candle. The room flickered into view: heavy teak beams, the curtain over the door moving gently in the breeze, the low window seat hung with pink grogram, her shoes as she had kicked them off, one wooden sole upmost, Joshua's spyglass, Ross's pipe, Ross's book, and a fly crawling.

He looked at her and at once knew the truth. She smiled a pallid apology. He went across to the table by the door and poured her a glass of brandy.

"Drink this. I will send Jud for Dr. Choake." He began to pull on his clothes, anyhow.

"No, no, Ross; do not send yet. It is the middle of the night. He will be asleep."

Whether Thomas Choake should be called in to her had been a dissension between them for some weeks. Demelza could not forget that twelve months ago she had been a maidservant and that Choake, though only a physician, owned a small estate which, even if it had been bought with his wife's money, put him on a level from which the likes of her would be seen as unimportant chattels. That was until Ross married her. Since then she had grown to her position. She could put on a show of refinement and good manners, and not at all a bad show at that, but a doctor was different. A doctor caught one at a disadvantage. If the pain was bad, she would almost certainly swear in the old way she had learned from her father, not a few genteel "damn mes" and "by Gods," as anyone might excuse from a lady in trouble. To have a baby and be forced to act genteel at the same time was more than Demelza could look forward to.

Besides, she didn't want a man about. It wasn't decent. Her cousin-in-law, Elizabeth, had had him, but Elizabeth was an aristocrat born and bred, and they looked at things different. She would far rather have had old Aunt Betsy Triggs from Mellin, who sold pilchards and was a rare strong hand when it came to babies.

But Ross was the more determined and he had had his way. She was not unprepared for his curt, "Then he shall be woke," as he left the room.

"Ross!" She called him back. For the moment the pain had gone.

"Yes?" His strong, scarred, introspective face was half lit by the candle; the upgrowing dark hair was ruffled and hardly showed its hint of copper; his shirt was open at the throat. This man...aristocrat of them all, she thought...this man, so reserved and reserving, with whom she had shared rare intimacy.

"Would you?" she said. "Before you go..."

He came back to the bed. The emergency had come on him so quickly in his sleep that he had had no time yet to feel anything but alarm that her time was here and relief that it might soon be over. As he kissed her he saw the moisture on her face and a worm of fear and compassion moved in him. He took her face in his hands, pushed back the black hair, and stared a moment into the dark eyes of his young wife. They were not dancing and mischievous as they so often were, but there was no fear in them.

"I'll be back. In a moment I'll be back."

She made a gesture of dissent. "Don't come back, Ross. Go and tell Prudie, that's all. I'd rather-you didn't see me like this."

"And what of Verity? You specially wanted Verity here."

"Tell her in the morning. Tisn't fair to bring her out in the night air. Send for her in the morning."

He kissed her again.

"Tell me that you love me, Ross," she said.

He looked at her in surprise.

"You know I do!"

"And say you don't love Elizabeth."

"And I don't love Elizabeth." What else was he to say when he did not know the truth himself? He was not a man who spoke his inmost feelings easily, but now he saw himself powerless to help her, and only words of his and not actions would give her aid. "Nothing else matters but you," he said. "Remember that. All my relatives and friends-and Elizabeth, and this house and the mine...I'd throw them in the dust and you know it-and you know it. If you don't know it, then all these months I've failed and no words I can give you now will make it otherwise. I love you, Demelza, and we've had such happiness. And we're going to have it again. Take hold of that, my sweet. Hold it and keep it, for no one else can."

"I'll hold it, Ross," she said, content because the words had come.

He kissed her again and turned and lit more candles, took up one, and went quickly out of the room, the hot grease running over his hand. The wind had dropped since yesterday; there was only a breeze. He did not know the time, but it felt about two.

He pushed open the door on the other side of the landing and went across to the bedroom where Jud and Prudie slept. The ill-fitting bedroom door opened with a long squeak, which merged into Prudie's slow rasping snore. He grunted in disgust, for the hot, close, sweaty smell offended his nose. The night air might be dangerous, but they could surely open the window during the day and let this stink out.

He went across and parted the curtains and shook Jud by the shoulders. Jud's two great teeth showed like gravestones. He shook again, violently. Jud's nightcap came off and a spot of the candle grease fell on his bald patch. Jud woke. He began to curse; then he saw who it was and sat up rubbing his head.

"What's amiss?"

"Demelza is ill." How call her anything but Demelza to a man who had been here when she came as a tattered waif of thirteen? "I want you to go for Dr. Choake at once. And wake Prudie. She will be wanted too."

"What's amiss with her?"

"Her pains have begun."

Epic!
By E. B. MULLIGAN
What a wreak - literally. We have a shipwreck, a love affair on the rocks, people trying to run other's lives when they can't run their own. Ross in deep in debt with Warleggan liking nothing more than to crush him. Julia is born and the apple of her parents eye. Verity Poldark & Andrew Blamey want forever and Francis say no. Mark & Karen Daniels and Dr. Enys - oh my! Affairs, Bitterness, christening, deceit, envy, folly, gambling, hunger, illness, jealousy, kindness, lies, murder, oppression, parties, quarrels, revelry, snobs, violence. And in the end a beautiful moment of hope.

Totally addicted to this series back in the 70's watching it on Masterpiece Theatre Sunday nights with my mom and sisters. I eagerly gobbled up the first 4 books
1945 - Ross Poldark
1946 - Demelza
1950 - Jeremy Poldark
1953 - Warleggan

I stopped reading the series in 1977 as the novels had gotten so dark that I wasn't enjoying where the author was taking the characters.
1973 - The Black Moon
1976 - The Four Swans
1977 - The Angry Tide

I was poking in a book store on vacation and picked up `The Twisted Sword' and enjoyed it tremendously (with one exception - I didn't care for the outcome for Jeremy at all).

It was so good seeing Zacky Martin & Mrs. Zacky, Tholly Tregolis, Jud & Trudy Paynter - they hadn't changed at all. Dwight & Caroline Enys (and Horace), Verity & Andrew Blamey. And of course Demelza and Ross (still all too human). George Warleggan remains the same fascinating character. And Cornwall, Nampara (the Ross Poldark home) Wheal Grace and Wheal Leisure all so familiar 40 years later.
1981 - The Stranger from the Sea
1982 - The Miller's Dance
1984 - The Loving Cup

1990 - The Twisted Sword
2002 - Bella Poldark

I am not sure I will pick up the last book as from the the reviews I don't think I will enjoy it as much. The author passed away in 2003 at age 90 so it is truly the last written by him.

From the publisher: Demelza, the miner's daughter that Poldark rescued from a fairground rabble, is now his wife. Demelza's efforts to adapt to the ways of the gentry bring her confusion and heartache, despite the joy in the birth of their first child. Additionally the seeds of dispute with Warleggan are sown.

Also from the Publisher: the Poldark series, the subject of the landmark BBC series Ross Poldark is a heartwarming, gripping, and utterly entertaining saga that brings to life an unforgettable cast of characters and one of the greatest love stories of our age. An intricately plotted story spanning loves, lives, and generations. The Poldark series is the masterwork of Winston Graham, who evoked the period and people like only he could, and created a world of rich and poor, loss and love, that readers will not soon forget.

Another fabulous book in this series. Highly recommend!
By Poppy
I am completely engrossed in this series. Far, far more than I expected after watching a few eps of the TV series. I have read the 1st three books: Ross, Demelza, and Jeremy, and each has captivated me. I am already planning to re-read them. That's how good they are. The characters are unusual, complex, and entertaining. The historical context is fascinating. Winston Graham wrote with sensitivity and restraint. He wrote in a very natural way about events that took place more than 225 years ago, but he left it to the reader to engage the world as he wrote about it. He never talks down to the reader, or gives explanatory details that take you out of the story. In that way the series is similar to reading Jane Austin. Who just wrote about her time, and assumed her readers understood her! Depending on your reading speed, you may want to order your next book "early". At this point -- 8/5/15 -- they are not all sitting on Amazon bookshelves, and you may end up waiting longer than you like for your next book. Like I am right now!

Wonderful #2 in the series
By Chris F.
Wonderful #2 in the series. Since the series is currently on PBS and the characters quite fascinating it was a great read. However, the author likes to use accents in much of his written dialogue and I found it frequently most difficult to wade thru. Again, some of the banking systems in old England, Cornwall to be specific, were also complicated and difficult to understand. The essential story is great along with the characterization but now & then it bogged down in complicated explanations. I often grew discouraged trying to make sense of the accented conversations. This is a most interesting tale and the series does a wonderful depiction of the basic story lines. If you are suffering from "droughtlander" this might be a fix. Not nearly as sumptious as Diana Gabaldon's but a great tale.
