A "One Trick Pony" Storyline

This reimagined version of the 2008 presidential election and subsequent Obama administration is, in many ways, compelling. It becomes less so after a hundred pages of being hit over the head with the same theme: the pursuit of money has corrupted us politically and personally. OK, we get it. So after a while this comes off as a repetitive rant, kind of tedious, and made annoying by too many typos and editing errors. On the plus side, the author's erudite writing style combined with many literary and historical references make this book a cut above the usual political diatribe.

It's probably a good book for someone that is not very familiar with the 2008 financial crisis or finance in general. I was genuinely disappointed in the number of spelling mistakes and typos throughout the book, especially given the price I had to pay.

THE 'Roman a clef" of XXIst century

Michael Thomas has written THE "Roman a Clef" of the twenty first century. It is not too obscure -- think seasons and winters for the self confessed economic genius of the world. He has written many fine books, characterized by erudition and artistic sensitivity. So, at his relatively young age, it is a wonder that Michael has created a suspenseful but highly credible tale of the corruption of Barak Obama in his dealing with Wall Street. Corruption above is used in an active mode, the President - in the book and in my experience - was utterly ignorant of the whole operation. The book uncannily identifies just those developments in the 2008 disgraces about which almost every sentient human has questions - how could it be? This book provides credible and suspenseful answers. If there is anyone in your acquaintance who would appreciate a really fine read, please send them Fixers as fast as your fingers can move on the computer.

About the Author
Mike Press is Professor of Design Research and Head of the Art and Design Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University. Rachel Cooper is Professor of Design Management at the University of Salford where she is Director of the Adelphi Institute for Research into Creative Arts and Sciences. The authors collaborated previously in writing The Design Agenda: a guide to successful design management which is published in both English and Chinese. This book comes with pre made flashcards for easy practice, chapters that follow a practical and logical sequence, and a CD-Rom that allows you to hear pronunciations of the specific medical terms covered. This book is providing my first exposure to medical terminology, and I feel it is a great resource now, and it will continue to be in the future as well. It has my recommendation!

You Really Need Both Books

I first came into contact with this work because it was a required text for my seminary class on ethics. Pieper was a first rate German philosopher and expert on the works of St. Thomas Aquinas.
If you study this book, Faith, Hope, Love (the three theological virtues), along with his other book, The Four Cardinal Virtues (fortitude, temperance, justice, prudence), you will have a wonderful primer on ethics from a classical perspective. I especially enjoyed his section on love. It is one of the best treatments of the subject I have read.
One word of warning is in order. Philosophy is not light reading. I know, it was one of my majors. Philosophy written in German and translated into English produces a book that is not for the timid. If you are willing to take on the challenge, more power to you. It is worth the effort, but you should know what you are getting into before you put down your money. This is a book for those who want to think and wrestle with ethics. It is not for everyone.

These Three Things Abide

This book is a compilation of three essays by the popular Thomist, the late Josef Pieper, on the theological virtues. Though Pieper writes from a Christian perspective, he is doing philosophy not theology. (The theological virtues are so called not because they are for theologians only, but because they depend directly on God's grace.)

The richness of these essays derives from their thoroughgoing personalism. Pieper defines each virtue in terms of interpersonal relationships. In faith, "the will of the believer is directed toward the person of the witness, toward the warrantor." "Hope says: it will turn out well....It will turn out well for us." And "to love means to rejoice in the happiness of another."

As always, Pieper writes clearly, logically, at times movingly. This book reminds us that while the source of these virtues is beyond human reason, the practical understanding and practice of them is not.

Brilliant, challenging, and wonderful

This book really cannot be praised too highly. Pieper's discussion is more deep and insightful than any psychology text I've seen, and he's not even trying to do psychology.
He uses traditional and technical words (like "sloth"), but this is necessary to distinguish shades of moods, emotions, and actions. I used to think of "slothful" as synonymous with "laziness" -- but this book made me realize what a huge difference there was. You could work hard every day, but if deep inside you know you could do great things, and you simply don't bother to do them, then you are guilty of sloth. Many Christians (and non-Christians) that I know, including myself, will recognize this as a part of their lives.
And that's just from one paragraph of "Hope", the least powerful of these three essays!

About the Author
"James A. Rehg, CMfgE," is an Associate Professor of Engineering at Penn State Altoona, where he teaches automation controls courses in the BS program in Electromechanical Engineering Technology. He earned both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from St. Louis University and has completed additional graduate study at Wentworth Institute, University of Missouri, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, and Clemson University. Before coming to Penn State Altoona, he was the CIM coordinator and department head of CAD/CAM/Machine Tool Technology at Tri-County Technical College. Prior to that, he was the Dean of Engineering Technology and Director of Academic Computing at Trident Technical College in Charleston, South Carolina. He held the position of Director of the Robotics Resource Center at Piedmont Technical College in Greenwood, South Carolina, and was department head of Electronic Engineering Technology of Forest Park Community College in St. Louis, Missouri. In addition, he was a Senior Instrumentation Engineer for Boeing in St. Louis. Professor Rehg has authored five texts on robotics and automation and has presented numerous papers on subjects related directly to training in automation and robotics. He has also been a consultant to nationally recognized corporations and many educational institutions. In addition, he has received numerous state awards for excellence in teaching and was named the outstanding instructor in the nation by the Association of Community College Trustees.

"Henry W. Kraebber, PE, CPIM," is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering Technology at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. He has fifteen years of experience and leadership in manufacturing operations, engineering, quality, and management. He has worked at the Collins Avionics and Missiles group of Rockwell International, the Plough Products Division of Schering-Plough Corporation, and Flavorite Laboratories, Inc. His work has supported the production of industrial, consumer, and military products in the food, consumer products, and electronics areas. He currently teaches courses in manufacturing operations, manufacturing quality control, and integrated systems in the Computer-Integrated Manufacturing Technology degree program. Mr. Kraebber earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University and a Master of Engineering degree in Industrial Engineering from Iowa State University. He is President of the CIM in Higher Education (CIM/HE) Alliance, a nonprofit corporation that supports CIM and manufacturing education. He is a senior member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) and the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE). He is an active member of the American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS) and has served as President and Vice President of Education for the Wabash Valley Chapter.

This book arrived well within the promised period of time and was in very nice condition. The material is a bit dry but no one reads a text book for the humor.
