Has ways to go

While the neurology section of this review is quite good, the general critical care questions are written amateurish. Not only are some of the questions nonsensical, with obvious lack of proof reading, but some of the answers are plainly wrong. The weakest part of the book is section on Cardiovascular Physiology where above mentioned examples abound, even though the whole section only has 15 questions total. High quality, professional proofing of questions is a major problem for reviews that tackle topics where good quality data and literature are lacking, however, exhibiting this level of inaccuracy with a topic that is straightforward and quite mathematical is inexcusable.

Not ready for prime time

As another customer noted, the first half of the book is really good: That is the Neuro-critical half.The questions are well written, logical and the answers can be validated on the basis of current guidelines/data. The second half (the General critical care section) is a complete disaster. I'm trying not to be rude here, but the some of the sections are really pathetic. The respiratory section needs to be re written. These questions are far from the rigorous standards of ABMS/ABIM. The Infectious disease section would be aced by a 2nd year IM resident.
In spite of the above issues, I did think the first half of the book alone made it worth my money. For a non neurologist, this is a great starter book along with 2 books by Dr Elco Wijdicks. (Look them up on amazon.com). I would advice the author/editor to include subspecialists (Cards/Pulm/ID)on her panel to write/edit relevant sections.

Very good, well written and organized.

I have done about half of the questions so far and find them to be a very nice review of the topics. The explanations are well written with references. Thought-provoking questions. I am a fellowship-trained neurointensivist.

About the Author

S. Thomas Foster is the Donald Staheli Professor and department chair of global supply chain management at Brigham Young University’s Marriott School of Management. He is an internationally recognized expert in quality and global supply chain management and has experience in manufacturing, financial services, and international oil exploration. He has consulted for more than 30 organizations, including Hewlett-Packard, Heinz Frozen Foods, Hyundai Corporation, and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Foster is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Operation Management, Decision Sciences, and Quality Management Journal. He has published more than 80 articles in journals such as Decision Sciences, Journal of Operations Management, International Journal of Production Research, and Quality Management Journal. His book Quality Management: Integrating the Supply Chain is an international best seller.

Scott Sampson is the Hazel S. Thorsell Professor of global supply chain management with the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University. He teaches MBA, executive MBA, and undergraduate courses in services management and supply chain management.

Sampson is the author of the textbook Understanding Service Businesses, which is used at universities around the world. His award-winning research involves service design paradigms, service quality measurement, and service supply chains. He has published research in leading academic journals, including Management Science, Production and Operations Management, Operations Research, Decision Sciences, and Journal of Operations Management. He received his MBA and PhD degrees from the University of Virginia and taught at Florida State University prior to joining the Brigham Young University faculty.

Cindy Wallin is a professor of global supply chain management at Brigham Young University’s Marriott School of Management. She earned her PhD in supply chain management from the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University. Wallin’s research focuses on buyer-supplier interfaces in the form of trust-based relationships, information sharing, collaboration, and collaborative inventory management approaches. Her research has been published in various journals, including Decision Sciences Journal, Journal of Supply Chain Management, Quality Management Journal, and Journal of Business Logistics.

Before pursuing her doctoral studies, Wallin was a commodity team manager for Intel Corporation. During her eight years at Intel, she also held the positions of senior buyer, purchasing manager, stores manager, and commodity manager. Before her graduate studies, Wallin also worked as an auditor for the Defense Contract Audit Agency.

Scott Webb is a professor of global supply chain management at Brigham Young University and specializes in logistics management. He received his PhD in logistics and operations management from the Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University. In addition to his PhD, he earned an MS degree in logistics management from the Air Force Institute of Technology and a BA in experimental psychology from the College of Idaho.

During his Air Force Career, Webb worked on both base- and Pentagon-level assignments. He separated from active duty military service in 2008 at the rank of major and after earning both AF Commendation Medals and the AF Meritorious Service Medal.

Please do not require this textbook.

In-chapter exercises are extremely difficult to follow because there are so many magic numbers that are inferred without any explanation. Some of the concepts are so basic that they're not even useful as a base for getting to more advanced topics. I wish I had never been required to purchase this book.

Don't Buy! You're Wasting Your Money! It's Identical To The 8th Edition!

Firstly, this is one of the textbooks required for a course of mine and I just received the book and when I opened it, I discovered that the actual text was not only upside-down, meaning I have to turn the book upside-down to read it, but it's also backwards. What I mean by backwards is that in the US, the text goes from the left side of the book/page to the right side of the book/page, here it's the opposite, you have to read it from the right side of the book/page to the left. So I received a defective copy which agitated me. But the primary reason why you shouldn't purchase this book is because I overheard a peer of mine in class mention that the 8th edition of this book (which is sold as new for less than half the price (around $30 for a tangible copy) and used for about $5-also for a tangible copy) is identical. I looked up the chapters here on Amazon, and compared them with my 9th edition textbook and it's the exact same! 14 chapters! Same chapter headings and content! I was fooled. This is more of the same, corporations vomiting the same textbooks with new covers citing the latest edition in an attempt to justify the exorbitant price tag that students have to pay! Thankfully technologies like Kindle and other e-readers are cutting into the profits of these bloodsuckers by making their digital copies less expensive. I feel ripped off. Why the hell would my instructor do this?! Why would he assign this expensive trash when the same garbage is sold for much less?!

Poor Editing of an otherwise good text

This book is fabulous at highlighting US Foreign policy and all that has happened in that arena since the start of the Nation. That being said, this book is FULL of editing mistakes such as When Carter had to address the interference of the Soviet Union in Afghanistan in 1999. 1999? Really? How do you miss that?

Enormously Pleased Teacher

I used this textbook to structure my project-based research and composition classes. I could not be more pleased with it!

Innovative, engaging assignments - all of which obviously connected to the overarching project - helped students carefully consider their assumptions about various subcultures, then test those assumptions through real-world interaction with subculture members. The tone and style of the book is direct and conversational, but the authors don't sugar-coat the difficulties and subtleties of ethnographic work. The extra dimension this brought to a basic "English 101" course was...well. As long as an administration is comfortable with using ethnography in a comp class, I will use this book to guide my teaching.

Let me just start out by saying that I am not a writer. What I am is a farmer. I'm not the best farmer, probably not the best anything. I'm surely not the best Christian, not even a real good one. This story is about me getting a new truck and the circumstances that surrounded the purchase. When it was over, I knew that God had performed a miracle in my life and provided me with the truck that I had really wanted. It wasn't until a couple of days later that I realized that it may not have been about me getting the truck, but about me getting the story. I have tried to tell everyone that I see, but I hope by writing it down, that it will reach many more people than I would have come in contact with. I hope that it will help everyone that reads it, to see the miracles that God provides in our lives every day. I know that it sure has opened my eyes.

Fun! and you just might learn something...

My 9 year old daughter exclaimed "this book is awesome!" after browsing through the colorful, enticing pages of Candy Experiments. There are quick experiments, and some that take longer, some very simple and some more complex or needing an adult's supervision (on the stove, eg.). Each one is accompanied by a clear explanation of what is happening. These are definitely accessable to the target audience (7-10 years old) but adults too will discover all kinds of amazing facts about the workings of physics and chemistry hiding in simple morsels of candy. The book has even inspired us to plan a "Candy Science" birthday party!

Makes me want to be a science teacher on November 1st!

Wow! This book is so exciting as I was reading it I wasn't even thinking, "Oh my daughter would like this" or "The kids in my class will like this" as much as I was thinking, "OMG CANDY! I WANT CANDY! I want to melt it and blow it up and separate the dyes and OMG CANDY!!"

Did you know that if dissolve Pixy Stix in water the water will get colder, but if you dissolve crushed Jolly Ranchers in water it will get warmer? Did you know you can make Peeps Hearts appear to beat? Did you know you can reshape candy canes into fun shapes by heating them?

This book makes me want to be a science teacher on November 1st. What a great way to get kids to give up some of their Halloween candy!

What better way to get kids interested in science than to use candy?

This book is a great way to get your candy-loving kid interested in science.

I purchased this book as a reference when my son needed to perform a science fair project for school. We have used it for that and more. The intro questions for the various experiments have grabbed my son's interest, and the experiments are quite achievable to do at home.

Pros:
Bright colorful pages and font
Easy to understand instructions
Each experiment has time and difficulty level guide
No experiments require turning the page
All materials are readily accessible
All experiments have a write up describing chemically & physically what is happening and why

Cons:
None

I recommend this book for science-minded kids or to encourage candy-loving kids to take an interest in science. As mentioned on the back cover, ideal age is between 7 and 10 but the book is also appealing for a wider age range. Several of the experiments do require adult supervision but some do not.
