Schaum's Outline of Machine Design

If you see this book look like a recently review, but is false. The book is an older edition with ligh blue covers and obsolete methods of solve problems, some problems have graphical solution per example. I will not recoment to buy it; is out of time, is from 1961, you really, do not have a use for it. Per example, for fatigue the best theory is Modified Godman Line.

I'm using this as a supplement in a class where the professor is not always easy to follow. The worked problems are really helping me. I wish there was some info on Mohr's Circle though. That would make this book go hand in hand as a study guide for Machine Design.

Great as a supplemental text or for review

The sciences underlying machine design are college-level mathematics (trigonometry, calculus, ODE) and physics, with emphasis on kinematics, statics, dynamics, strength of materials, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics. Thus machine design is really a kind of capstone course for mechanical engineers.

This book is primarily useful as a source of clear examples of various aspects of machine design with completely worked out solutions plus additional solved and unsolved problems to help you get through a class in machine design or to help you review if you haven't touched the subject in a while. It could never stand alone as a tutorial in this subject due to the broad amount of background material. The author takes note of this by providing a mechanics review quiz for the student at the beginning of the outline. It is suggested if the student does not score over 90% that he/she should review the necessary background material before attempting to proceed. The outline then manages to touch on every aspect of machine design in a detailed fashion. The book concludes with a chapter of suggested projects, because after all, the goal of a machine designer is not to design and analyze gears, bearings, and brakes, but to take this knowledge and design an entire mechanical system. The first few projects cue you with questions a designer would need to ask himself/herself, but later projects just give the problem statement and allow the reader to construct the project as he/she sees fit. Among the projects are a water level automatic control, one man passenger elevator, and a lawn mower. Some of the names of these projects really show the book's age, but they are still worthwhile exercises that test the student's knowledge of machine design. It is a very old book, but the laws of physics haven't changed in 30 years, so it is still a useful Schaum's outline. I highly recommend it.

Robert V. Guthrie's classic novel, Even the Rat Was White: A Historical View of Psychology, is an excellent historical document that views psychology from multiple perspectives. Guthrie cites many archival documents that are not found in typical, mainstream resources, which exposes students and educators alike to not only elusive but also informative material. It is an excellent source for informing and intriguing readers and inquiring minds about the impact that African-American psychologists have had on the field of psychology.

The first part, or section, of Guthrie's literary work focuses on the "scientific" measure of race and racial differences. From physical appearance (e.g., Shaxby and Bonnell's photometer) to mental aptitude (e.g., the Stanford-Binet and Wechsler-Bellevue scales), there existed a myriad of measurement devices and instruments for measuring racial differences. Of course, the majority of these measurements indicated the racial inferiority of American minorities (viz., African-American inferiority). The spurious results were the product of three major factors: (a) experimenter expectancy, which was due, for example, to the previous research of eugenicists such as Francis Galton and Charles Davenport, (b) culturally-biased instruments or measures, and (c) suspicious statistical analyses (e.g., Charles Babbage noted the unethical practices of "trimming" and "cooking" data sets.).

As stated previously, the result of the measure of racial differences led to an assumption of minority inferiority. Even though much research has been conducted to invalidate and repudiate these claims (e.g., M. J. Mayo and Horace Mann Bond have produced literature in support of racial equality.), the segregation of ethnic groups, which was supported by prominent psychologists such as Henry Garrett, has existed in the past, and stereotypes and negative opinions about minorities continue to plague American society today. It is clear that not only the field of psychology but also society held beliefs about racial inferiority and/or superiority. As the title of Guthrie's book, Even the Rat Was White, indicates, this belief was even generalized to animals (in this case, rats). Ignoring the fact that characteristics such as intelligence are multifaceted variables that cannot be sufficiently measured with one test or instrument, research supporting the congenital abilities of animals (e.g., Robert Choate Tryon's "maze-bright" and "maze-dull" rats study) was generalized to humans. Just as the majority of researchers and theorists were White, which subsequently produced "White" theories, and measurement instruments were culturally biased in favor of European Americans, experimental rats were also white.

The second part of Guthrie's book enlightens the reader of the early trials and tribulations of African-American scholars. The author describes the systematic manner in which black scholars were denied the opportunity to study psychology, publish their work, and receive recognition and financial aid. He also pays tribute to many Black scholars by providing short bibliographies, which includes a list of contributions. Some of these scholars include Francis Cecil Sumner, the first African American to receive a PhD in psychology, and Joseph White, a founder of the Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi).

This historical overview of many prominent, African-American psychologists was interesting and insightful. It enables the reader to develop an appreciation for the problems faced by Black scholars and discover important contributions such as Kenneth B. Clark's research on the detrimental effects of racial segregation, which eventually influenced the 1954 Supreme Court decision that required public schools to racially integrate their classrooms. Without this resource, one would encounter much obstacle in acquiring such information.

The final section of Guthrie's book is briefly discusses the implications of previous chapters. The author demonstrates that the "myth of mental measurement" and eugenicist philosophy (as demonstrated by William Schockley) continue to exist and stereotype. This is unfortunate; hopefully, society can learn from Guthrie's writings and subsequently make progress. In conclusion, the author states, "While at present it is difficult to justify the existence of a Black psychology, there is a theoretical basis for it." Hopefully, this book will not only advance the existence of Black psychology but also will serve as evidence of its existence, purpose, and need.

Robert Guthrie's Even the Rat was White, was written from the historical perspective of African Americans and was designed to inform readers of the challenges African Americans faced and contributions African Americans made against all odds in the psychological sciences. This brief review is aimed for the general reader and will succinctly cover topics discussed in the book.

Even the Rat was White is divided into three parts. The first part discusses and analyzes psychology and racial differences. The second part of the book presents influential African American psychologists, their struggles, and their contributions to the fields of psychology. The third and final part of the book is composed of conclusions and future directions. The first part of the book painted a detailed historical picture of the stereotyping of African Americans and how psychology did nothing to dismantle these ideas; it only perpetuated the obviously flawed stereotypes that kept African Americans as inferior individuals for hundreds of years. An example of this is IQ research, IQ tests, and IQ standardization. These tests are not culturally sensitive, are designed by middle-class whites for middle-class whites to excel on. The second part of the book provides biographies of several prominent African American psychologists giving detailed background on their upbringings and the adversities they had to overcome to receive their education and have their work taken seriously. Their contributions are also noted at the end of each biography. The final chapter summarizes the first two parts and draws the conclusion that although African Americans have fought and made immense progress in the plight for higher education and respect in the field of psychology, there are still several areas of psychology that fail to recognize that research conducted almost a century ago that guides psychological practice today has been refuted and still serves no other purpose but to enable an inequality between races.

Overall this book was an interesting read that provided an alternate history of psychology that is not normally discussed in most textbooks or most undergraduate psychology courses. Even the Rat was White brings to light the issues that are still being covered up today in psychological research and practice. As a graduate student in psychology, I would recommend that every psychology professional read this book. It will make you think twice about commonly employed practices in the professional setting such as IQ testing and research ethics.

Brief review of Guthrie's Even the Rat was White

Robert V. Guthrie's Even the Rat Was White does a wonderful job of illuminating the often untold history of racism in psychology. It is integral for those entering this field to become well acquainted with the potential ramifications of allowing science to be utilized as a tool for discrimination. Guthrie provides numerous examples of this, including the misuse of intelligence testing as "proof" of racial inferiority. Under the guise of research, numerous anthropomorphic measurements were obtained and used to support what was viewed as the inherent inferiority of certain races.

Part II of the book focuses on psychology's increasingly important role in historically Black colleges, and provides information about the backgrounds and contributions of numerous notable African American psychologists. Overall, this work provides a frank discussion of some of the most egregious ethical missteps in the history of psychology. This is a valuable perspective that unfortunately is rarely mentioned in most textbooks, and serves as an important reminder of the importance of conducting ethical research as well as questioning the societal norms that are taken for granted.

In order to progress beyond the problems highlighted by Guthrie, I think this is a must read for those in any social science field. However, although this book does seem to be geared mainly towards those entering the field of psychology, it is detailed and well-written, making it an interesting read for anyone with a general interest in the history of racism.

The Best Poison Apple Book I've Read...

This book is frightening in a good way with its scary plot and wonderful progressing details.

Plot:
Twelve-year-old Anna Dipalo is given a note one day from the most popular girl at school, Jessamyn Ito. Anna and her best friend, Dory Welch go down to the old girl's bathroom by the gym and are offered in a "secret club" by Jessamyn and her friends, Kima and Lauren. But first they have to go through the "initiation" to call on the spirits. Anna finds something in the mirror and faints.

After an afternoon with being angry at Dory, Anna ends up ignoring her. Then the next day, when she "goes" to the nurse's office after getting sick by dissecting a frog, Anna meets Emma Diablo, and they have tons of fun together, including eating lunch on the roof and sneaking off school grounds.

Then, after dining and ditching, Anna is accused by Jessamyn for stealing her wallet. Anna pleads innocence, and after getting in-school suspension, Anna discovers more about Emma.

When the Halloween dance arrives, Anna sneaks off to save Dory from danger. But Jessamyn and her friends appear and they threaten Anna, causing her to travel into the mirror with Emma. But just before Anna is pulled in completely, Dory saves her, and Anna breaks the old girl's bathroom mirror.

This book is fascinating and a great fast read for scary book fans. A must in your Poison Apple collection!

Great way to get an introduction (or update) on medical laser technology

Excellent overview of light/tissue interaction. Laser technology is changing quickly and this is the most up-to-date text that I have found. The other book sin the series are excellent as well.

Great New Laser Text!

Dr. Small has created a very readable, well referenced, delightfully complete and unbiased opus on Laser and Light. This textbook is current, easy to navigate and has copious pictures and diagrams, well developed patient education sheets, consents and procedure flow sheets. The physics, histology, tissue interactions and safety of each laser treatment and wavelength are presented in a sensible manner that serves as a great reference for neophytes and more experienced laser practitioners alike. The videos on the ebook are well filmed and offer a wealth of insight.
I regularly recommend this book to my students and staff.
In full disclosure, yes, I am a bit of a nerd and I enjoyed reading every well laid out page. :-)

This is the ideal text for anyone entering the field; but browsing it will also be a pleasure for the experienced reader. It is a highly recommended "practical" textbook.

Other questions aren't as easy, like how to I migrate to ASM (see Chapter 6 of this book) or how do I upgrade when I have a standby database in place (discussed in Chapter 8). This book makes it easy to understand how to migrate from one OS to another. My personal favorite chapter was the one discussing Database Downgrades (Chapter 13). I once asked on the My Oracle Support Communities how many people have actually practiced a database downgrade and hardly anyone that responded to the poll has done so. If you want to ensure zero data loss a period time after you upgraded (like 1 week or 1 month or more), then you need to know how to downgrade the database. This book is a great find for any Oracle DBA that needs to upgrade or migrate their databases. Even if your databases are all currently at the latest/greatest release, this book is still vital for your career down the road. At some point in the future you will need to upgrade to Oracle 13c or 14c or migrate from one OS to another.

Viswa Viswanathan

Viswa Viswanathan is an associate professor of Computing and Decision Sciences at the Stillman School of Business in Seton Hall University. After completing his PhD in artificial intelligence, Viswa spent a decade in academia and then switched to a leadership position in the software industry for a decade. During this period, he worked for Infosys, Igate, and Starbase. He embraced academia once again in 2001. Viswa has taught extensively in fields ranging from operations research, computer science, software engineering, management information systems, and enterprise systems. In addition to teaching at the university, Viswa has conducted training programs for industry professionals. He has written several peer-reviewed research publications in journals such as Operations Research, IEEE Software, Computers and Industrial Engineering, and International Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Education. He has authored a book titled Data Analytics with R: A hands-on approach. Viswa thoroughly enjoys hands-on software development, and has single-handedly conceived, architected, developed, and deployed several web-based applications. Apart from his deep interest in technical fields such as data analytics, artificial intelligence, computer science, and software engineering, Viswa harbors a deep interest in education, with special emphasis on the roots of learning and methods to foster deeper learning. He has done research in this area and hopes to pursue the subject further. Viswa would like to express deep gratitude to professors Amitava Bagchi and Anup Sen, who were inspirational forces during his early research career. He is also grateful to several extremely intelligent colleagues, notable among them being Rajesh Venkatesh, Dan Richner, and Sriram Bala, who significantly shaped his thinking. There are better options

Packt's Indian roots and willingness to publish anything, on one hand, and India's vast supply of English-speaking IT specialists, on the other hand, have been a dangerous combination: burned by several disasters in book form, I was opening "R Data Analysis Cookbook" with some trepidation. In the event, I was pleasantly surprised to discover a below-average-quality but decent book, which supplements familiar "standards", done by other books, with original material, e.g. when it discusses calling R from Java, or uses RgoogleMaps package. I would guess a 50/50 split of the page count between (a) machine-learning/"data science" methods and (b) "everything else", primarily data manipulation and visualization. My concern is that the latter is not sufficiently substantial to make up for the fact that on the former, "R Data Analysis Cookbook" is weak, whether viewed in isolation or compared against other titles. I would not recommend the purchase, and suggest "R in Action" by Kabacoff - a high-quality R introduction with a substantial statistics-and-machine-learning component - of the heftier and more expensive "R Book" by Crowley as superior alternatives.

UPD. With the benefit of a little more life experience, I would say: don't spend your time on *any* R book. Python is the way to go.

good R book with succinct code and clear explanations

The R Data Analysis Cookbook offers succinct examples on a variety of data analysis topics including vectorized operations, using the apply / lapply / sapply family of functions, exploratory data analysis, classification, regression, data reduction techniques and geospatial analysis. I enjoyed the sections that dealt with using shiny and the various treatments of regression techniques. I thought the section that covered time series analysis was well done overall, and would have liked to have seen the authors expand upon that topic in more detail, though I understand that space must have been somewhat constrained given the number of topics this volume addresses.

The book provides recipes relevant to start your data analysis side project using R.

Of the various books about R and data analysis, this one hits the road running. It is primarily focused on data analysis using R (in that order). To do so, it assumes that you know what you want to get done with data analysis and provides recipes to get you started with various tasks to do data analysis.

That said, it does not provide information about R language features or explain how a specific analysis technique works. For such information, you will have to look elsewhere such as "Art of R Programming" and "Machine Learning: An Algorithmic Perspective".
