For your very best friends

I saw this book and thought it would be such a great birthday present for my best friend - I know she will appreciate the thought and sentiment that I’m planning to put into it. I ordered it early so there would be plenty of time to come up with thoughtful answers for the questions (I’ve got till January!) This book is really cute - even though I paid attention to the dimensions I was still surprised at how small it was. It’s just hard to imagine such a little book. It is about the size of the palm of my hand.

There are some fun prompts in this book although they do seem a little repetitive, so you’ll have to be thoughtful to fill out this book without giving the same answers for multiple prompts. The prompts are pretty open ended too, so you can be creative with your responses. For example: “you ___ the best ___ ever” or “I am so ___ that ___” could be filled in with so many different answers. I also like that the pages have a lot of blank space so I can write long answers or additional memories on the page if I want to. I’m going to enjoy filling out this book, and I’m sure my friend will love it. If you’ve got a sentimental best friend of your own, I’d recommend giving this book a try.

For anyone who loves thoughtful.

Some of the questions seem repetitive and it can be tough to come up with clever answers. I'm in my 30's and my best friend in her 40's and she LOVED it and sent me these photos as she went through it with jokes about what I'd written. For someone who enjoys thoughtful gifts that take a little time I recommend it, especially if you can play with your answers a bit. It would be nice if it had other things more related to memories you share, but it was still fine. I also cut out a few little pictures and taped them inside for fun.

Brought a kid lots of smiles and a mom some happy tears.

I bought this gift for a nine year old boy that I work with. I regularly tell him how awesome he is, because he is the absolutely coolest kid I've ever met. I felt that for his birthday, I would let him in on why I think he's so awesome, and this book perfectly fit the bill. I spent a lot of time carefully thinking of clever or nostalgic lines to write in the book; I even typed up all 50 reasons and my responses on my computer so I could think each one one over. When I surprised him with the book on his birthday, he had a smile ear to ear while reading every entry; it even made his mom cry (happy tears of course). The real genius of the book is that it forces you to think back on your relationship with your recipient, and hopefully brings a smile to your face as you think of and remember how great that person really is.

Beautiful, Tragic Memoir

'Shadows of the Workhouse' is a brilliant memoir by Jennifer Worth that carries on her story of working as a nurse in the East End in the 1950s which began in her first installment, 'Call the Midwife.' Her descriptions of hardships endured by those who were forced to enter the workhouses near the turn of the century are heart-wrenching. Though she points out that in terms of social welfare they were well ahead of their time, that doesn't change anything for those people who suffered under the system. The first section especially focuses on people she encountered who grew up in the workhouse system. I found it curious that the second section centered on a woman who had never entered the workhouse, though she would have worked with people who were its victims. The third, and final, section tells the story of a man who entered the workhouse only in his old age after it was converted into a home for the elderly. Therefore, the title is somewhat misleading, but the stories are still amazing.

The story of Jane, Frank, and Peggy growing up in the workhouse together, and the long-term emotional effects that it had on them was full of emotional highs and lows. The reader cheers for their successes and cries for them when they are hurt. This story was the most relevant to the author's theme of the effects of the workhouse on those who were still alive two decades after they were officially closed. (Officially only because it would be impossible to just release thousands of poor people into the streets, so the workhouses carried on under other names with only slightly improved conditions for decades.) After this third of the book, I was ready to give it five stars.

The second portion of the book tells the story of Sister Monica Joan being on trial. Without giving anything away, I will just say that Sister Monica Joan was not one of my favorite characters in this or the first book, so a full third of the book focused on her was a little dreary for me. Also, I failed to see what any of it had to do with "living in the shadows of the workhouse." I'm sure others disagree and found this section amusing, but this is what brought it down to four stars for me.

The final part of the book tells the story of Joe Collett, who is an elderly man added to Worth's nursing schedule because of ulcerated war wounds - not wounds from WWII or even WWI, but from the Boer War in 1899. I greatly enjoyed this story of their growing relationship and his reflections on so much of England's history that he had experienced. She becomes the one bright light in his life, and he becomes like a grandfather to her. Collett's life is filled with struggle, ambition, love, and tragedy. The fact that this man who has already been through so much ends up relocated to a workhouse that has been made into a home for the elderly when the Canada tenements are scheduled for demolition, would make the most hard-hearted tear up.

My only concern is that this book is categorized as a non-fiction memoir, but Worth includes detailed dialogue that she would not have been present for, such as that of Peggy and Frank's childhood. It would seem unlikely that either of these people remembered in perfect detail or that they would share it all with Worth. Some of these scenes read more like factual historical fiction than nonfiction even if they are enjoyable to read.

The book focuses on design and construction of interface metaphors. The author truly uses an engineering approach to design and development of metaphors, analyzing user activity on real and interesting examples. The book is a real present as researchers on the area of HCI as well as practitioners. The book also will be useful for students specialized on HCI. Our research team has carefully studied Dinesh Katre's book. The book is very informative. Looking at it, you cannot find empty, useless sections of text. About the Author
Deepak M. Kamat, MD, PhD, FAAP, received his MD and PhD from the University of Bombay, India and then completed his residency in pediatrics and fellowship in pediatric immunology and bone marrow transplant at the University of Minnesota. He also served as the program director for the combined Medicine/Pediatrics program at the University of Minnesota. Currently, he is a professor at the Carman and Ann Adams Department of Pediatrics at the Childrens Hospital of Michigan and Wayne State University. He is also the vice chair of education, director of the Institute of Medical Education, and program director for the International Health Pathway and Pediatric Global Health Certificate program. Dr Kamat is honored with many teaching awards by medical students and residents at the University of Minnesota, at West Virginia University, and at the Childrens Hospital of Michigan/Wayne State University. He practices general pediatrics, clinical immunology, and international health.

Dr Kamat is the lead editor of the Point-of-Care Quick Reference on Pediatric Care Online™. He Kamat is appointed editor of the Index of Suspicion Section of Pediatrics in Review from July 2008, and he is an associate editor of the AAP Textbook of Pediatric Care.

Henry M. Adam, MD, FAAP: Until recently, Dr. Henry M. Adam was a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Hamilton College and studying as a Woodrow Wilson Foundation Fellow at Yale University, he graduated from the State University of NY-Upstate Medical Center in 1979, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Following pediatric residency training at Mount Sinai Medical Center in NYC, he was a Fellow in general and behavioral pediatrics and then joined the faculty at Einstein.

He has directed the Pediatric Outreach Program (1984-86), the AIDS Day Care Center (1987-90), and the Pediatric AIDS Primary Care Program (1990-94), all at Jacobi Medical Center. As an educator, Dr. Adam directed the pediatric residency training program at Montefiore Medical Center (1994-2002), has received the Lewis Fraad Teaching Award, and has been elected to the Leo Davidoff Teaching Society.

Deborah Campbell, MD, FAAP, is Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and Associate Professor of Clinical Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s Health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Program Director for the fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, and Director of the Division of Neonatology at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. She conducts the Low birth weight infant Evaluation and Assessment Program (LEAP) and has served various leadership roles at the American Academy of Pediatrics, New York State Association of Regional Perinatal Programs and Networks, NYC Local Early Intervention Coordinating Council, and Greater New York March of Dimes Health Professionals Advisory Board and National March of Dimes.

She is a member of the Greater New York Hospital Association Perinatal Safety Collaborative Advisory Group, the National Quality Forum Perinatal Collaborative, and the New York State Perinatal Quality Collaborative Neonatology Expert Workgroup. She also serves on the NYS Palliative Care Education and Training Council, an expert panel that has developed guidance and advice for the New York State Department of Health on best practices in pain management and end-of-life care. She served as a member on the AAP Taskforce on Implementation of Newborn Hearing Screening and the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program. She is currently co-chair of the Bright Futures Guidelines, 4th edition Infancy Expert Panel.

Great book!

This is a really good book if you're in a bit of a time crunch. It is very short and to the point. The flash cards are excellent and will teach you a lot with very little fudge in between. I recommend it.

Some value.

Better than others, but not adequate. The building exam devotes a considerable number of questions to plans, area and volume calculations. It is a very basic exam, testing for knowledge just to get you started on the right foot. Nothing esoteric whatsoever. I suggest reading a handyman book and a law book as test prep instead of these prep books. They would help with the test and increase your useful knowledge. This book does not have a lot of information in it. Only one side of the page is printed on.
