Serial Films of Pearl White - Where's the Beef?

If you are looking for a book about Pearl White, you may be disappointed. This is a book about the effect of Pearl White and the media on the public, not really about her movies or Pearl White herself. It is an over-intellectualized view of Pearl White and the serial film's historical and cultural significance. It mentions Pearl's progressive image to equality, women's rights, roles, and feminism, but this is already known to students of Pearl White's work. To be fair, the book tells you what it is in the title and in the book itself. For example, on page 17. "pg 17.
This volume brings together seven original essays that cover the genre and its historiographic importance, narrative patterns, marketing, and cultural reception which will challenge the received scholarship by a wider contextualization of the serial phenomenon and its fearless femmale stars. What made Pearl White and her serial sisters important in an international sense? Why did she become such a popular star worldwide, or did she not?"
It does have some information about Pearl's movies, especially about the french connection that doesn't seem to have been focused as much on in previous literature. Also, for film scholarship and criticism to have finally caught up to Kalton C. Lahue's work 50 years earlier, it seems that the serial film may finally be recognized as significant or as art. This is a good thing, although too little, too late. Most people reading film criticism of Pearl's work have no opportunity to view most of the original sources. Literally reading books, criticism, opinions about movies you've never seen. Most of the footage is locked up in dusty vaults restricted to the public, with no plans for its use. Up until recently, when I look up most of the videos of Pearl White on the internet, I found that I was the one who uploaded them. More important and significant than this work is the awesome work of The serial Squadron, who have archived "The House of Hate" on DVD. This should also be available on Amazon soon if not already, so you have one stop at Amazon to get them both.
Several of Pearl White's films and movies still exist, but are not accessible on DVD or streaming media. For example, UCLA has "The Fatal Ring", The Library of congress has "Pearl of The Army", etc. I did enjoy learning about such historical figures as Marie Marvingt and the exist of part of the serial Protea. The silent Film scene is better with this book than without, I am just saying that it is more important that the original sources should be protected and made available to the masses, than historical criticism and discussion be written about them.
Hopefully, if the silent serial film and works of Pearl White is now accepted by film scholarship, she can get the respect and media treatment of a Buster Keaton. You can now find a DVD collection of not only Chaplin, but Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd as well. Let's hope this will happen for the works of Pearl White. and Clara Bow.

About the Author
Dmitry Budker is Professor of Physics at the University of California at Berkeley, Faculty Scientist in the Nuclear Science Division, LBNL, and Co-founder and Scientist of Rochester Scientific, LLC. His research interests are related to the study of violation of discrete symmetries and the development and applications of the optical-magnetometry techniques.

Derek Jackson Kimball is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Physics at California State University, East Bay. His research focuses on using techniques of experimental atomic physics and nonlinear optics for precision tests of the fundamental laws of physics.

Almost Magnum Opus for Optical Magnetometry

This book presents the extensive and practical knowledge of many leaders in a wide range of topics that extend over almost every conceivable aspect of optical magnetometry. If this is your first encounter with optical magnetometry, the book’s core principles and its extensions into applications will hold your attention if you are persistent but the road between chapters is a bit bumpy. As an edited book that deals at its core with the coherency of spins in quantum states and spin dependent forces, it does fall short of maintaining coherency from chapter to chapter. So although its “Preface” describes the 20 chapters as pedagogical, those chapters are wanting as a teaching package because of a lack of coherency between chapters but excel at being sources of key concepts and examples of applications. Coherency is also lost in a mix of units as, for example, in the case of tesla per square root hertz in one chapter and gauss per square root hertz in another. Readers with experience in the field may find some surprising and gratifying revelations over the physical scale of topics from small scale microfabricated atomic magnetometers and optical magnetometry with nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond to large scale planetary and interplanetary magnetic fields. A few chapters are far too short and could do better as perhaps books themselves and those chapters include Chapter 2, Quantum noise in atomic magnetometers, and Chapter 3, Quantum noise, squeezing, and entanglement in radiofrequency optical magnetometers, and Chapter 13, Remote detection magnetometry.

The book is divided into three parts and the disjointedness between the three parts, I Principles and Techniques, II Applications and III Broader Impact is unfortunate and worse than that between chapters. In particular, the title of Part III “Broader impact” seems to be a hurried poor description but the quality of the material is very good and should appeal to a wide audience. “Part III Broader impact” contains one of my favorite parts of the book, namely, Chapter 18 “Test of fundamental physics with optical magnetometers” and I suggest interested readers of that chapter check out the “Lorentz Violation Experiment” at [...] .

Even with its disjointed flow and an absence of coherency between chapters, I enthusiastically recommend this book to engineers and physicist. Some aspects of this book may also appeal to nanotechnologists.

About the Author

Patricia Cornwell was born in Florida and raised in North Carolina. Sickert may have been odd -- but was he really Jack-the-Ripper?

Cornwell here restates her assertion (as previously presented in her PORTRAIT OF A KILLER and CHASING THE RIPPER) that Walter Sickert, a famous painter, was also the infamous Jack-the-Ripper. While she succeeds in demonstrating that Sickert was eccentric (but which truly great artist isn't to some extent?) she does NOT succeed in proving -- at least to MY satisfaction -- that he was a murderer let alone that he was the Ripper. Yes, there is typical (and quite interesting, though questionable) Cornwellian forensic "evidence" presented, but even that cannot overcome other factors that would tend to preclude him as a viable suspect.

I have read numerous other books about the Ripper murders over a long lifetime, more than a few of which claimed to identify the "real" Jack; some of them actually made compelling arguments for their (different) candidates. Rather recently, Russell Edwards in NAMING JACK THE RIPPER used forensic DNA evidence to support HIS candidate; I distrust his overall methodology but tend to be more inclined to believe his choice of perpetrator (someone not infrequently identified by others as well). But being "more inclined" doesn't mean I am in any way fully convinced.

Cornwell's book, while it was fascinating to read, also left me unconvinced. Of course, YOU might decide otherwise, so give the book a try and make up your own mind. After all, it IS well-written, and whether she's right or wrong, or whether you agree with her or not, it's still an intriguing case to read about, ponder, and discuss. In so doing, you may also choose to read a more encyclopedic work (such as THE COMPLETE JACK THE RIPPER by Donald Rumbelow), one that provides objective, impartial information about ALL the possible Ripper suspects; you may be surprised at how your initial predilection for any one candidate (whether Sickert or someone else) might, ultimately, be swayed by examining other strong contenders.

Cornwell's work on the Ripper is entertaining - not in the manner of a master detective putting the pieces together. More in the manner of an eccentric aunt who comes to family get-togethers once every few years and, after drinking a few glasses of wine, will tell you exactly who killed Kennedy and why with the authority of someone who was there even though she wasn't born at the time.
Cornwell's entire case is subjective and her facts are mostly insinuation.
In fact, her book should be taught in classrooms as a classic example of how to create propaganda. She conflates Sickert and the Ripper constantly - not even separating the two in the most basic sense of the persona of the Ripper vs the persona of Sickert. Often she'll use the name Sickert when referring to the Rippers actions and call Sickert the Ripper when referring to Sickert's known actions. It was a little confusing at times.
Facts about Sickert are placed next to possible activities of the Ripper - one example that made me laugh out loud is a bloody bakers knife that might have been from a Ripper crime next to "Sickert loved to bake". That sounds like evidence to me. Jeez.
Its hard to say how she came to her conclusions about Sickert's inner life and relationships. Quotes about him are usually completely decontextualized - in one section a whole sentence is made out of multiple one or two word quotes. She does have a good explanation as to why she doesn't quote more extensively (the people who control these sources wouldn't give permission). I'd be more inclined to believe her version of these stories but her whole perspective of Sickert seems to be colored by the intense emotional response she had to his paintings. I looked at many of the paintings she references and I have to say I do NOT see what she sees.
Suddenly everything is evidence of guilt, even stuff that was common (Sickert was intrigued by the Ripper, snubbed Oscar Wilde after his imprisonment and owned a red kerchief) and a few things that contradicted. Sickert didn't regularly date or mark location on his letters. SNEAKY. Sickert regularly made dated drawings that showed exactly where he was. Oh slipped up! He could have been near some Ripper killings. Sickert was a germophobe. Ripper probably killed in a manner that would make it easier to avoid bodily fluids. Ripper wrapped body parts in newspaper. Sickert wrapped paintings in newspaper. Sickert had multiple art studios. No one knew their locations so now they're bolt holes. Maybe they're near the murders? Who knows? Sounds incriminating to me. Ripper might have worn disguises. Sickert had a habit of wearing disguises. I mean, really?
Supposedly she showed her evidence to an officer who said she had enough for a search warrant. I'd like to know what evidence that was, because I see no evidence.
There are a few interesting points she makes. Its probable that Sickert (or someone close to him) wrote a couple of "Ripper letters". This isn't really surprising - based on what I've read about the time period Ripper letters were the Twitter parody accounts of the time. I've read at least one contemporary account (that unfortunately I don't remember the source for) that casually mentioned a relative who wrote Ripper letters and then watched for them in the papers. Its only significant because Cornwell has decided that most of the Ripper letters are "real". Her evidence? A handwriting expert that determined that most of the letters were written by the same person imitating different hands. Bizarrely in the book she actually points out at some length that handwriting isn't a science but still uses this determination as authorative. She doesn't appear to worry about or discuss any letters that she can't directly examine except for the From Hell letter (which is the most likely to be "legitimate" due to the included kidney).
It does appear there were more Ripper killings that commonly acknowledged though I don't agree with all of the killings she places under that umbrella (usually due to the killings closeness to where Sickert might have been) and it does seem likely that some of the Ripper letters might have been written by other killers who were either copycats or triggered into fulfilling murderous desires after reading the detailed newspaper accounts. But her conclusions that all of them are legitimate is a stretch.
There's also a strange undercurrent of anti-intellectualism. She lists off the many languages Sickert knew as if they were evidence. She claims very basic rhymes in Ripper letters are "too clever for an illiterate." Whenever she hits an investigative dead end she treats it like a purposeful act of the Ripper - as if he predicted her investigation and the kind of technology we'd have today.
Cornwell appears to dislike Sickert intensely. I'm sure she would crisply say that she dislikes Sickert because she dislikes murderers. She handwaves away all arguments against her beliefs as people defending Sickert for their own reasons. I've heard some cynical views of why she's so intense on this issue (she did buy a lot of Sickert art and memorabilia before publishing her first book) - I tend to think she's a true believer.
I'm not going to say Sickert was an angel - if her account is to be believed (and I'm not sure it is) it sounds like Sickert was a deeply unpleasant man who had his share of secrets. I suppose this book doesn't DISPROVE anything and Sickert has been linked to the Ripper murders before. But men have been cold to their wives, told wild third hand tales about famous murderers, and had strange habits without being murderers throughout human history. Even her most compelling evidence requires accepting a lot of assumptions.
Anyway this is an entertaining book - even a thought provoking one. If you enjoy conspiracy theories as thought experiments this might be up your alley.

Adventure and More

This book, published in the 1930s, is somewhat different Wheatley fare. For one thing, it's unusually imaginative, with Wheatley's descriptions of aquatic and other life found by the protagonists during deep-sea explorationn in quest of lost Atlantis believable and lively. Likewise enjoyable is the adventure the characters undergo when, saved by chance from stultifying death on the ocean floor, they encounter a race of horrible, fish-eating humanoids who chase them until they finally reach the lost island of Atlantis, now existing in a submerged but beautiful state, with a race of pleasure loving, peaceful survivors. The legend of Atlantis has fascinated many, and the book reveals how even decades ago people believed the lost continent to have stood on what is now the Azores. They Found Atlantis demonstrates the fascination that continues until today with the tale of a perfect world that was destroying itself before being destroyed.

Evil play in an Evil time.

Using the Satanic occult in an attempt to bring down Hitler in WWII?
It's always fun when an author uses alternative means as to the fall of Nazi Germany or a parallel dimension to it's surival.
Here Dennis Wheatley uses one of the more famous events to portray his story. The fall of Hitler and the reason behind it, duping Hitler to believe that he will be ressurected as a superbeing that would rule the world. As if he wasn't trying to already.
A little dark for those with a weak stomach but you soon get use to it.

Just The Thing For An Intelligent 12-Year-Old

I read this when I was a kid and it really impressed me: derring-do, occult thrills, a hot dame, and Adolf Hitler. I dipped into it again years later and discovered a fairly pedestrian thriller, but if you're young and looking for seemingly arcane and forbidden reading, this will fill the bill. I read several other Wheatleys and this was, for my teenage (well, pre-teen) money, the best. It spurred a life-long interest in the occult. Though I remain a skeptic, I love reading about the mountebanks and charlatans who populate its byways. "They Used Dark Forces" boasts a nasty magus clearly based on Aleister Crowley, who was a thousand times more interesting than his fictional counterpart here. Still and all, good fun for an undemanding (or naive) reader....

About the Author
Norman Friedman is arguably America's most prominent naval analyst, and the author of more than thirty books covering a range of naval subjects, from warship histories to contemporary defense issues. Since the 1980s, Friedman has been contributing regular columns analyzing world naval developments for Proceedings magazine. He earned his PhD in physics at Columbia University.

U.K. Battleships: An Illustrated Design History

Having previously read a number of standard works on British Battleships by R.A. Burt, Alan Raven, and David K. Brown, I seriously wondered what new information Norman Friedman would bring to the table. Rather than stepping on the toes of his predecessors, Dr. Friedman chooses to take a boardroom-level approach to the subject of British capital ship design from "Dreadnought" to "Vanguard." As with his previous books, he keeps the nitty-gritty details of warship design in the context of the political, economic, and military realities of the time. I've been a British warship fanatic for some time, but even I was impressed by the depth and extent of the research on display here. The bibliography lists a large number of Admiralty documents from the British National Archives, along with original Ship Covers, minutes from Churchill's tenure as First Lord, and design notebooks.

Friedman is Friedman - photo captions go on for paragraphs, and details are frequently thicker than your Grandma's pea soup. I've come to expect this, and it doesn't really bother me too much anymore. However, this book is ambitious even by his standards. People fascinated by the process of warship design will find much to love here, right down to the frustrating "can we make the ship two feet wider and gain a little metacentric height, but risk losing a half knot at deep displacement?" type questions that have plagued naval staffs and naval architects for decades. There is an enormous amount of information here on the design of the aborted Lion-class, G3 and N3 types, and 12-inch "treaty battleships" sketched before the 1930 London Naval Treaty , which I hadn't read before. Friedman's takes on the buildup to the "Dreadnought revolution," the origins of the battlecruiser, and the design of the Queen Elizabeth-class vary substantially from their "standard" telling. He also delivers an even-handed explanation for some of the more controversial design decisions, including the King George V-class' 14-inch main battery, the Nelsons' bridge arrangement, and Hood's armor scheme. There's even an entire chapter devoted to battleships designed and built for the export market during the pre-war Dreadnought craze, including ships intended for Greece and the Netherlands.

This book is BIG, and I feel like I'm not giving it the credit it deserves. I wouldn't recommend reading it you haven't read any of the classic works on the subject, or some of Norman Friedman's recent works, especially "Naval Firepower" and "Fighting the Great War at Sea." It covers an enormous amount of ground while still focusing on the titular subject. The text is immensely detailed, but still makes effective use of plain language to describe complex concepts. In many ways, this book is a British analogue to Friedman's "illustrated design history" on American battleships. You could probably read both back-to-back and get two very different takes on a similar story.

Now, a little bad news. Like a lot of recent Seaforth titles, my issues with this book lie mainly in it's presentation and editing. A few of the double-page photographs have gutters which run through the ships' masts or funnels. The editing and sentence structure in the first chapter is frequently terrible, but thankfully much better in the rest of the book. The quality of the plans is all over the place. A.D Baker III's and Alan Raven's work fares the best, although they are presented at too small a scale. Unfortunately, John Roberts' and George Richardson's drawings are frequently washed out and jittery looking. Comparing Roberts' crisply detailed, large-scale foldouts in "British Battleships of World War Two" with the plans in this book was rather depressing.

That said, this IS an excellent work, which can sit proudly on my shelf alongside my other table-shaking naval references. The color section, featuring a number of fold-out reproductions of Admiralty draughts, including a stunning gatefold depicting HMS Valiant in 1939, is an added bonus. Some nagging flaws in visual presentation aside, this is one of the finest naval histories I've read in a long time.

Excellent continuation of the series and a must have for any naval enthusiast, as are the prior volumes.
I wish it would have had something on HMS incomparable and British attempts to sell capital ships after WWI or inquiries received.
The section on the export market is most informative as nations sought the ultimate weapon of the era.
It covers the entire era of the battleship with great insights as to what went into a design, the politics and economics etc.
Well worth the wait and I look forward to there being a continuation of the series into aircraft carriers.

Publisher errors mar an outstanding book

While an outstanding book with all the information you could want design, development and service of British capital ships. I have the same complaints as a follow reviewer:
1) The line drawings were small and extremely hard to read - the contrast was poor - this was in contrast to all his U.S. Navy books.

2) The captions, like in his "Naval Firepower" book were extremely small and again, hard to read.

The very light contrast drawings should not have gotten by the publisher. For the price of this book I would have expected better.

This seems like the most complete theoretical book on Qi Men Dun Jia written in english.
Joey Yap has a group of scientists/researchers called Joey Yap research team.
They scientifically prove and track what feng shui things give what outcome.
Joey exchanged this knowledge he has gained from the research with the knowledge of old Qi Men Dun Jia masters
in Hong Kong and other places. He is the only one who has studied Qi Men with different masters. So he has a wide view on the subject.
This book is most comprehensive theoretical book and it is so complete because the theory points to ALL applications of Qi Men.
Anyone who wants to seriously study the theory before reading books about the various applications, this is your book!
Congrats to Joey on a book well written.

The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because of the price. Joey's books are commercial and overpriced most of the time.
This one is also overpriced in my opinion. At the other hand, this book contains a wealth of knowledge.

About the Author

Desmond Bagley wrote 16 novels, becoming one of the world's top-selling authors, with his books translated into more than 30 languages. He was born in 1923 in Kendal and brought up in Blackpool, beginning his working life, aged 14, in the printing industry. After working in an aircraft factory during the Second World War, he decided to travel, working his way through Europe and southern Africa, and in 1951 joined the gold mining industry before becoming a freelance journalist in Johannesburg, where he wrote his first novel, The Golden Keel, in 1962. In 1964 he returned to England, finally settling in Guernsey with his wife, where he died in 1983.

Mysterious, exciting, well-crafted page turners

Desmond Bagley is a terrific thriller writer. While these two books may be read independently of one another, it's worth bearing in mind that there is a link between them due to a secondary character appearing in both - so it makes sense to read them in the order in which they are printed.

The first novel here is set in the wild, bleak landscape of Iceland. It begins with a mystery (we are told in the first sentence that the narrator finds himself encumbered with a corpse) and swiftly moves onto a fast-paced chase in which just about everyone seems to be out to kill the `hero'.

The second novel, `The Freedom Trap', begins in an equally mysterious way (this time in London). Without giving away the story, suffice to say that the hero has to undertake a strange task which motivates the plot for the first half of the book at which point the author pulls the carpet from under our feet by revealing that nothing that has taken place up to that point is quite what it seems.

Bagley is a master at this kind of `sleight of hand' whereby the mystery is revealed only gradually and then suddenly we are given some new perspective which changes everything. For this reason, I often prefer the first half of one of his books to the last half.

Anyway, in brief, these are two cracking stories. I marginally prefer Running Blind though I have to say that the first half of The Freedom Trap is also excellent. The last half switches into `pure adventure' mode with less subtlety of plot but lots of chases and fights which is OK but nowhere near as gripping (to me, anyhow) as the earlier part of the novel.

Run for Freedom!

Running Blind, and Freedom Trap, two great action adventure novels by an author, even Alistair Maclean said was better than him.
Running Blind, in which a Brittish Cold War spy is given a package to deliver to his contact in Iceland, while at the same time keeping the package from falling into the hands of his Russian opposition. This novel is filled with enough great chases, fist, and gunfights to thrill any action adventure addict.
The Freedom Trap has another Spy being sent into prison to infiltrate a gang of spies for the opposition. His task; infiltrate the group, find out how they are smugling conflict diamonds to finance their plans, then stop the diabolical plan before it destroys England, itself. There is enough thrills, chills, mystery, and adventure to keep any thriller fan hooked.
Written before the technothriller where the story, and action is based on the people, rather than on the gadgets.
Pick up this one, and you won't be disappointed. I promise you.

I read this book years ago, it's stood the test of time. I was sad to learn that the author has since passed away, so I'm glad I have a copy.
