This Is How You Work a Room

This is the most wonderful book, really something I've needed for years. Being an only child, I tried always to hide in the background, lost my breath in a crowd, and most certainly had no idea how to work a room. I didn't know that skill existed. All I knew was that some people could do it, but not me. Jeanne Martinet explains it all, with very helpful tips and turns of phrase, behaviors that draw people in, and it's a game really, something you can master. Actually it's quite fun, and I've practiced literally whole chapters out of the book to get it right. After all though, there's no right to it, just the knowledge that everyone else is as nervous as you are, and that people really do want to make friends. She also has great suggestions on texting versus email, versus a real, handwritten note––which one is most appropriate under which circumstances. Hers is a sophisticated take on how communication works in our talk driven world. I should add that Martinet is a really funny woman, so those childhood fears of mine began to seem just plain silly, worst than that, irrelevant. The very best thing about the book is that at its heart is a true belief in person-to-person fun and laughter and mutual respect.

Old friend is still funny and now an even better friend

Took a look in a bookstore just to see what had changed from original edition -- I bought the copy years ago and found Martinet funny and incredibly helpful. Bought the new edition (and have now bought two gift copies). Still a fun read, and I have already used two of the new techniques (anyway, I think they're new) to get myself out of one uncomfortable situation and work my way into another (very comfortable) other situation.

Jeanne Martinet takes the fear out of the process of talking to strangers!

This book helped me a lot. I didn't like all of the techniques, but most of them were very useful and some truly helpful. The Art of Mingling taught me to get over my anxiety/fear about talking to people in social situations. Simple concepts like "the Buddy System" work (at least for me!). I can now enter room full of strangers and not want to rush out of there as quickly as possible. I can now actually have fun in such situations. Quite a contrast to my life before reading this book!

Okay, but nothing to write home about.

I love Jared and Alex and this story was pretty sweet and loving g, but seriously boring. Maybe I just wanted more or for it to be longer, don't know but it was missing something for me.

Interesting, but full of stereotypes, oversimplifications and exaggerations

It was interesting to learn a bit about the key players in the commodities markets. The author Kate Kelly made a nice selection of people coming from banks, hedge funds, trading firms and corporate hedgers. She could have done a much better job though. She went into the usual clichés that she thinks the public wants to hear, while she had the opportunity to write something truly interesting and educative to readers. She over simplifies many things and exaggerates on many points. She could have taken the opportunity to educate the general public about commodities trading but instead she's just pandering to stereotypes and serving over-simplifications.

How could one have a $8billion crude oil position, oil prices moving down 15% in a week, and the hedge fund manager losing “only” $500mil. Her description would imply a $1.2billion loss. Clearly it shows that she overstated positions to make it more dramatic. Or she probably doesn’t understand that the leverage was coming from options and not only from futures. Also as if a commodities hedge fund would borrow from banks! Clearly they don’t, they can get added exposure from futures and options that have embedded leverage, and they always have a very high cash balance.

It shows she doesn’t master her subject and has a very poor understanding of high finance. And then she goes on to push for more regulation in those markets. But the commodities markets have barely moved for 5 years now! Is that also the fault of speculators? The bull run in oil prices in 2007-2008 actually is the reason why US shale oil production is what it is now and growing at such a pace. The oil bull run actually saved the US economy and the world economy. If prices stayed too low for too long, there would be no shale oil today, US production would be much lower, and we would face an enormous energy shortage and much higher prices today. It would have been interesting for her to explain that instead of going into the usual nonsense. I also suspect she doesn’t depict the real personalities of the players there, and just want to make them into the usual stereotypes.

Somebody who made 2,000% for his investors over 10 years, with only one down year, and who not only survived but excelled during the crazy moves that commodities witnessed over that period clearly MUST have a lot of introspection, a great system, a very detailed understanding of the market and not only think or speak about kickboxing or home-design.

The book could have been so much better. But I’m sure some readers will enjoy it though.

Ambitious Undertaking

Kate Kelly took on a large task in attempting to piece together the world of commodities trading from scratch. This is noble of her, but my compliments related to this book end here.
Overall, this was a very superficial glance at the commodities space. Rather than explain any inner-workings of the industry, Kelly just describes a few average bios of traders. This isn't necessarily bad (see: Market Wizards), but the bios themselves seemed contrived and were often uninteresting/unimportant (why was Fan even mentioned in this book? Because of her gender?). There are plenty of "ooey-gooey" stories out there amongst commodities traders, but Kelly only really touches on one of them (Marc Rich).
The few "details" about commodities trading that Kelly does go into are both cursory and inaccurate at times (contango/backwardation). We are given very broad views of trading strategies and only really ever learn the market direction that a trader was taking. 1 month smoke free and going strong

It's true- if you are ready to quit and start a new chapter of your life but just need a kick in the butt and the voice of reason in your head, this book will help you do that. I have not smoked MJ since the day I read it. Now I'm in therapy and making life changes to help me stay sober. The strength of this book is that it gets inside the potheads brain and taps into their psychology. It teaches you to realize you ACTUALLY aren't enjoying pot anymore and that shift in your understanding will help you move away from it. I've tried self help books for addiction or quitting smoking (usually geared towards cigarettes) and none of them helped the way this simple short book did because Chris Sullivan acts like a coach, who has to yell loudly to get thru your brain fog! As a former pothead he gets it, and takes a very practical approach.

My live in boyfriend still smokes pot daily and I have only been tempted once or twice believe it or not, and I was able to move through those temptations easily. As Sullivan relates, when you realize you aren't really enjoying it - you are just acting on the memory of enjoying it- it becomes easy to quit without temptation and cravings.

Some bonuses for me of quitting pot: increased confidence, motivation, dreaming!, desire to take on more responsibility, strengthened artistic vision, better communication with my partner and huge improvement in memory.

I still have a long way to go before I feel completely stable in my recovery. It I also optimistic and feeling strong thanks to this book giving me a swift kick in the butt.

Positive Tools for Quitting for Life

I've used cannibus for 30 years -- but have quit many times. Only to start agin because I was using willpower to quit. I knew it was bad for me, but just could not resist the temptation. This book put it all in the proper perspective -- and by giving me positive tools to use, I believe I've quit for life !! I'm HAPPY TO BE FREE of this addition!! Thank you for giving me the tools to quit for good.

This book is amazing and helped me successfully quit with no desire to dabble or come back to it whatsoever. It completely changed the way I view Marijuana and helped me understand why I felt like crap every time I was without. I love that it teaches you not to use willpower but just change your perspective on the matter. It is a quick and easy read and invaluable to how it will set you free!

Storytelling is so important in so many things - including grant writing!

I kinda liked this book. Until now I have made it a point to avoid writing a book review for any nonprofit fundraising books on grant writing. I guess I am breaking with tradition for this book because I see some redeeming value to it. The first edition for this book came out in 2001 and had two less chapters and no appendix. Also, chapters 2, 3 and 6 of the original edition have been reworked for the new edition.

I suspect Amazon will be posting a Search Inside feature for this book in the next month or so. As a result, I won't be listing the chapter titles here. The book includes numerous examples of inquiry letters, introductions, location descriptions, cases for support (needs), goals-objectives-desired outcomes, and executive summaries. I found them all to be well done.

This book is all about how to make a grant proposal readable. And I wish it had stuck to that topic alone, because when it moved into the realm of research and packaging the grant proposal that is where I had problems. Two books that might be of interest to the reader of this book are: "What's Your Story?" (ISBN: 9780132277426), and "Developing Your Case for Support" (ISBN: 9780787952457). I think both of these books will complement "Storytelling for Grantseekers" which seems to be a kind of short little book at less than 180 pages.

Let's face it, a nonprofit that has a chance of winning grants almost always has to be an established one. And nonprofits like that typically have a sound written Business Plan, a well-written Case for Support, an Annual Financial Report, a functioning Annual Giving Program, and some major donors. Hopefully there is also an awesome tricked out Web site that helps spread the word about the nonprofit and solicits donations, too. If the nonprofit has all of this BEFORE it attempts to apply for grants, then there really is no need to do special research in order to create a grant proposal. Hence, I did not see the need for Chapter 2 (research & relationships) in the book being reviewed.

I would have liked the book better if Chapter 12 were moved to the front of the book and replaced the existing Chapter 2. The new Chapter 2 could explain that the grant writer need not do research. But instead he or she can cut and paste the story that already exists (or should exist) in the nonprofit's business plan, case for support, Web site, etc. And if the Web site includes the story, then references can be made in the grant proposal to the nonprofit's Web site if the grant funder wants additional information that could not be included due to space limitations in the grant proposal requirements.

I loved Chapter 8 on budgets. But I thought chapters 10 and 11 could have used a little bit of work. Chapter 10 dated the author for me. She seems to be fixated on grant proposals that need to be sent to a printing press for distribution. I bet she believes in soliciation mailings via snail mail for Annual Giving Programs instead of email soliciations, too. I think the book would have been better if the author had explained the virtues of the software application called Adobe Acrobate Writer. Anything that can be printed on paper can be printed to an Acrobat file (PDF file). And it sure is easy to send a PDF file as an attachment in an email. No mention of this was made in the book.

As far a Chapter 11 goes, I found it to be either dated or incomplete. I'm sure there are some instances where a grant funder may want to make a site visit. However, in today's Internet Age it is so much more professional and economical to create a Web site that provides a "tour" of the nonprofit online. The funder can simply visit the Web site and get an eye full. Without such a Web site the organization will look a bit "less than" and probably not be up to snuff in the eyes of the grant funder. And that translates into "no donation." None of this was mentioned in the book. 4 stars!

A well written grant-proposal guide (that won't put you to sleep)

Storytelling for Grantseekers: A Guide to Creative Nonprofit Fundraising

Grantwriting books are, unfortunately, often as confusing and tedious as the process itself. Clarke's book, "Storytelling for Grantseekers" is a welcome reprieve from the jargon-laden books that have been the standard-bearers for the past 20 years or so. From the conversational tone to the organization of the book, she's made it easy to follow, with real examples that clearly illustrate her points.

Most metaphors only go so far, but in storytelling Clarke has found perhaps the best way of explaining in comprehensive terms the process of writing a proposal. She doesn't take the idea too far; instead, she relates it in concrete, reasonable terms without oversimplifying the process. Clarke's storytelling model would also work well in a grantwriting course or workshop. She takes a common-sense approach to explaining some of the more arcane aspects of grantwriting, and brings humor into the process without sounding trite or condescending.

Especially important and unique to Clarke's approach are the budget and cash-flow sections. Instead of presenting a budget as a 'necessary evil' that is secondary to writing the proposal, she argues that the budget is essentially a translation of the proposal into numbers, and is equally important in telling a nonprofit's story. She offers clear explanations and provides effective tools and examples to follow. Most nonprofits do not take the important step of creating a cashflow chart for their organization. In these lean times, cashflow is critical to ensure a program or project's success. It's also important for managing and monitoring a nonprofit's operating funds throught the year. Clarke thoroughly discusses these issues and again provides examples.

One casualty of the proliferation of websites is that many nonprofits incorrectly assume that grantmakers will get all the information they need from a nonprofit's site. Clarke explains how much foundations rely on the information provided in the proposal itself. Websites can change overnight; proposals are still the cornerstone for getting in the door at a foundation. Of course, it's important that the story is consistent between the site and the proposal, but one is not a substitute for the other.

Clarke's book offers reassurance that the process doesn't have to be as daunting as it appears. As more nonprofits compete for fewer dollars, it's helpful to have a step-by-step guide through the maze of grantseeking.

Grantwriting book for more creativity

I just started grant writing and this is one of my top favorite books because it helps with developing more creative letters and proposals. I would have liked to have seen more examples of Letters of Inquiries. There are also other grant writing books out there too. One of my other favorites is "The only grant writing book you'll ever need".

interesting story told by an indifferent author

The Glock is indeed a cultural phenomenon in America, and an innovative product (at least when it first appeared), with an interesting story behind it. So I was looking forward to reading this book. In some ways I was satisfied, but in others I ultimately disliked the book. My review is based on a pre-release sample of this book, so there is some chance that the published version is slightly modified, but I am sure that most of it will be the same. I hope you find this review useful.

In a nutshell, the author manages to capture the story of Glock - the company, the pistol, and the man behind it all. However, he also inserts a lot of commentary about guns in America which detracts from the story.

THE GOOD:

- You do not need any knowledge about Glock or firearms to read this book. The author describes in detail how revolvers and semi-autos work and how Glock is different.
- The book follows the major (and even lesser known) developments in the firearms market and legislation in the US throughout the history of Glock as a company. It starts with the 1986 Miami FBI shootout which precipitated the large-scale move away from revolvers towards semi-auto pistols. It covers things like the assault weapons ban and funny deals that Glock (the company) was involved in to try to buy back large capacity magazines and make a profit. Who knew that Rahm Emanuel, then a staffer in the White House and now mayor of Chicago, was involved in getting the major gun manufacturers to agree to voluntary safety locks?
- Gaston Glock and the people around him are well described with vivid vignettes. For example, how even after he was financially successful, he would apparently collect those little sample shampoos from hotels. Or how a hot stripper was used to promote the 10mm Glock.
- The author provides even handed treatment of most issues. For example, he admits that in the Miami shootout there was plenty of human error, and it wasn't simply about the good guys having inferior weapons. He admits that the Glock is not perfect and there have been numerous known malfunctions which the gun's aficionados turn a blind eye to, and the company itself tries to suppress through buying the defective units and silently settling cases out of court.
- Essentially Glock was in the right place at the right time, and this comes through really well in the book. Gaston Glock was a small-scale manufacturer of knives and simple household items when he overheard that the Austrian army was looking for a new pistol. Then there was plenty of controversy around the gun being undetectable by airport scanners (not true; turned out that employees manning the scanners were asleep once, and a Pentagon employee had an axe to grind), or sales to Arab dictators. Or NYC specifically banning the Glock, while the NYC police commissioner and firearms trainers flaunted the ban and carried the gun privately (until the press caught on). And lastly, the Glock was in many way similar to the revolvers it ended up replacing: simple and reliable, more so than its competitors.

THE SILLY:

- There are some non-sequitur statements like "Glock is the Google of modern civilian handguns" or mentioning how one police department wanted to upgrade their firepower so they went from .357 Magnum to 9mm.

THE UGLY:

- The author received some shooting lessons directly from Massad Ayoob, a well regarded shooting expert. In return, he makes Ayoob look silly for choosing to carry a weapon (never mind that Ayoob is a former police officer and minor celebrity who probably has good reasons to care about his safety). Referring to Ayoob and his girlfriend, the author sarcastically opines: "Like many gun owners who carry, they find last night's local television news report of an armed robbery at the neighborhood's 7-11 more compelling than the statistically small chance of being the unlucky customer paying for a Slurpee when a bad guy attacks."
- The author has some pervasive anti-gun bias that shows up even when he discusses facts and data which are inconclusive or contradict his opinion. The last chapter before the epilogue tries to discuss the impact of the Glock and handgun ownership on American society. When discussing the recent Virginia Tech massacre, the author says about the shooter: "Whether his choice of the Austrian brand raised the horrific body count remains a matter of speculation. It probably did." Later on he quips "A national ten-round cap seems like a logical compromise that lawful gun owners could easily tolerate." And then on the next page he admits that "The total number of guns in private hands in the United States is at an all-time high, yet violent crime is back down to where it was in the early 1970s. The murder rate is even lower - at the level of the early 1960s." Basically, he ends the book with a strange and contradictory chapter which tries to be an overarching synthesis of gun ownership in America, but ends up looking unfocused and bad.

VERDICT:

I wonder who this book was written for. The author works for Bloomberg and lives in New York City, where it is practically impossible to own a gun, and he clearly does not pretend he cares about guns. So maybe this book is for other big city yuppies who want to know about this Glock thing rappers sing about. For that audience, the book is great. However, for those who own a Glock (I do not, by the way): this may not be your book. The book is still valuable because of the investigative details it presents, but it is clear that the author is not very passionate about his subject.

There is plenty of interesting history in this book, especially about Gaston Glock and his company. I just wish the author had focused on that and avoided trying to analyze guns in America, a larger topic which is controversial and clearly beyond his grasp.

Compelling, And Surprisingly, Nearly Totally Neutral.

“Glock” is that rarest of beasts—a mainstream writing in which the author makes zero errors about guns, and takes almost no political positions with respect to guns. This is the most neutral book on the topic I have ever seen, which is surprising given that the author, Paul Barrett, worked and works for the violently and maliciously anti-gun Michael Bloomberg. It is not true, as several other reviewers claim, that “Glock” is pro-gun control. It is a history book, not a book of politics, or, for that matter, a technical book on Glock handguns.

The book is a straight chronological history interwoven with personality profiles of all the leading players. The one personality looming over everything, of course, is Gaston Glock—sometime machinist of car radiators, door hardware, and knives. The latter led to contacts with the Austrian Ministry of Defense, and when the Austrian military began searching for a new handgun, Glock designed a revolutionary gun from the ground up. The rest, as they say, is history—and a history well covered by this book.

“Glock” is suitable for pretty much any reader. If you want a basic primer on handgun manufacture and use, this is your book. If you want a cultural history of handgun sales and marketing in America in the past three decades, this is your book. If you want an accurate view on the competing political views of gun control proponents and defenders of gun rights, this is your book. And if you just want an interesting story with interesting (and mostly flawed) characters, this is also your book.

Very, very occasionally Barrett (whose name, ironically, is the same as the main brand of .50 caliber, that is, very powerful, rifles sold today) slips in his understanding. “Why, gun-control advocates ask, do civilians need a variant of the military rifles carried by American troops? The answer relates to aesthetics and psychology.” Maybe it does, but more directly, it relates to the reason that the Second Amendment exists—so that citizens can, if necessary, fight American troops in a possible future tyranny with weapons that give them a chance in skirmish warfare and the ability to acquire heavier weapons. Barrett doesn’t grasp this. For the same reason, he sees no reason not to limit magazine capacity, ignoring both the military necessity of large magazines and that even in civilian (police and citizen) armed self-defense large capacity magazines have frequently proven necessary. But he does grasp, for the correct technical and practical reasons, the silliness of modern arguments over so-called “assault weapons.” And these slips are few and far between; they do not detract from the book.

In 2013, when this book was published, Barrett saw correctly that the Left had “abandoned gun control.” Like the dog returning to his vomit, the Left has since latched onto gun control again. As they say, gun control is like crack to Democrats—they know it’s bad for them, but they can’t help themselves. We’ll see how that plays out in two months, in November 2016. But whatever the future holds for gun grabbers, this book will stand for a long time as a readable, fair, and interesting summary exposition of the modern American handgun industry and culture.

excellent!!

I don't like long drawn out books, this one was an easy read and stated a lot of facts concerning Gaston Glock and his amazing story of conceiving possibly the most widely used pistol in history...
One thing that you will read about is the arrogance of mr. Glock; he definitely does not sound like a nice person at all, even firing his own family! But his arrogance paid off and it helps that he was at the right time in the right place to take over the American pistol market. Interesting read especially if you own a Glock pistol.

Pitelka uses the notion of spectacular accumulation to contextualize the acquisition of "art" within a larger complex of practices aimed at establishing governmental authority, demonstrating military dominance, reifying hierarchy, and advertising wealth. He avoids the artificial distinction between cultural history and political history, arguing that the famed cultural efflorescence of these years was not subsidiary to the landscape of political conflict, but constitutive of it. Employing a wide range of thoroughly researched visual and material evidence, including letters, diaries, historical chronicles, and art, Pitelka links the increasing violence of civil and international war to the increasing importance of samurai social rituals and cultural practices.
