Review
Edited by three educators in the Department of Applied Educational Science at Umea University in Sweden this work brings together 14 chapters authored by 19 international scholars. Providing an international coverage of the use of technology and interactive media by children and young adults, the chapters are separated into four sections-the context of interactive media, contemporary learning, learning environments, and contemporary challenges. As with other titles from Information Science Reference, this work has both a traditional table of contents and an annotated, or expanded, table of contents, along with a compilation of references and index. The reference styles used throughout the work are not consistent, nor are the spellings or term usage, which can cause problems for readers who are trying to find materials on a similar topic throughout the book. The content is current and applicable to those working with students in the K-12 setting in any country, seeking knowledge about use of interactive media in schools, multiple literacies, and using interactive media to meet these literacy outcomes. --Sara Marcus

Beneath the surface of perpetual wars, Corsican syndicates, Vietnamese gangsters, and the CIA postured for control of the Laotian opium trade. American puppets under an anti-communist banner, exploited the populous. Communist extracted a heavy penance from Western collaborators. Winning hearts and minds competed with death's harvest. Crawling out of the French garrison Isabelle, Max Kohl a German in the French Foreign Legion plunges into this lethal world. As a boy soldier of the Third Reich, his Nazi mentors taught him the military skills to survive. Haunted by past anti-Semitic sins, he drifts on the tides of continuous Indochina conflicts.

From Kirkus Reviews
[An] epic look at French defeat in Vietnam and the entwined lives of the locals, soldiers and foreign nationals trying to survive in unstable times...character development is strong, particularly for a novel this heavily rooted in action. A well told story about finding new beginnings in the aftermath of defeat." - Kirkus Reviews.

Review
[A] compelling study of a remarkable character whose journey takes him from Hitler's war machine to the jungles of Vietnam... Bourg's sense are sharp, with a narrative full of timely, appropriate detail...scenes are fully rendered as to setting, character, and the service of an intricate plot...Vietnam rings dead on. Bourg's debut is an accomplishment, a sensuous and bawdy celebration of rugged survivors in a threatening world." Clarion Reviews (four stars out of five).

‘I’m a soldier of fortune. Death is a by-product of my profession.’ So says battle-hardened yet optimistic Max Kohl, the unforgettable main character who dominates Bourg’s massive, immersive debut novel. In a lavishly detailed narrative, Bourg takes his readers through the many picaresque adventures of Kohl’s life, and the plot is so smoothly handled that the result has few dull spots… A hefty but worthwhile first novel. Historic Novel Society.

Excellent Read
By J.Marshall
This is an interesting and very informative book about a dark time in history I knew so little about. The descriptive writing takes you to foreign and exotic lands and back into the 1950's through today. The diverse characters are well developed and draw you into their story of struggle and triumph, friendship and family. You can tell extensive research went into this novel. Highly recommended!!!

Review of The Man who Walked out of Isabelle
By Mark A. Nobile
This is a tantalizing and incredibly interesting book. Isabelle packs a very colorful international cast. However, I couldn't get enough of Max Kohl...Bond, Bourne and coolest guy on earth combined into one extremely well developed character. The professional soldier's, action packed historical journey through the decades, shroulded by war, was insightfully interjected with a deep concern for what the true meaning of family and friendship amount to. A five star read. This book is special!

Great story on a little known aspect of history
By TJ
This one took me by surprise a little. A war-torn, exploited, and struggling Vietnam is the last place you'd expect to find the human element in these characters, but as their stories weave together, that's exactly what happens. Great ending too!

In this book is a collection of 130 talks that were given by Shri Siddharameshwar Maharaj, guru of Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj and Shri Ranjit Maharaj. The talks in this book were recorded and edited by Nisargadatta Maharaj and were originally published by him in two volumes in the Marathi language under the name of "Adhyatma Jnanacha Yogeshwar" in the years 1960 and 1961. The text was reprinted in the year 2000 at the insistence of Shri Ranjit Maharaj. Afterwards it was translated into English for this book, truly a modern day spiritual classic in its own right. Also included within the covers of this book is the text "Master Key to Self-Realization" which was authored by Shri Siddharameshwar Maharaj in the form of a methodical explanation of many fundamental principles of Advaita Vedanta and Self-Realization. The teaching found here helps the aspirant to form a solid foundation for understanding the fundamental principles of non-duality and in realizing one's True Nature.

The Best Kept Secret of the Spiritual Book World
By Kalpa
Quietly and unobtrusively this masterpiece has crept onto the market. A high quality hardcover published in India privately, the book is one of the best expositions of Advaita, meditation and Advaita in existence in the English language.

The book is a translated series of talks given by Siddharameshwar Maharaj in 1934 to a small group of his devotees including Nisargadatta Maharaj and Ranjit Maharaj. Nisargadatta was then a devotee; he recognised the greatness of his master and of his elder fellow disciples, and made notes of these talks as they were spoken, in Marathi. In later years the book was made available in two volumes in Marathi only. Within three years of meeting this master Nisargadatta realised and the rest is history! In 2006 it was translated and made into one high quality volume which also includes a re-translation of another book by Siddharameshwar, "Master Key to Self Realization" which makes up the first small part of the book. As far as I know only two thousand copies have been printed in English. The translation is ably made by a a man who had already translated J. Krishnamurti books into Marathi. In some places it is obvious that he has used Anglicisms unnecessarily, e.g. Priest instead of Brahmin; Illusion sometimes instead of Maya, but these are very small points and in no way detract from the book.

The teachings are profound, and exhibit the authority that only a Self- Realized man or woman can muster. It covers pure advaita, bhakti beyond liberation, and hammers away at the readers ego-consciousness in a way rarely ever seen in a book,it would have been an awakening experience to be present at these talks. In my own opinion, however, it is not for beginners on the path. If you simply dip into this book anywhere it will satisfy, but the wrong impression of what Siddharameshwar is getting at may be formed in places. It is preferable to hunker down and give time to read the whole book. I am personally reading it thoroughly for a second time, there is so much to glean from its pages.

There is a short introduction written by Nisargadatta himself to each part of the book. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

Worship at the Feet of the Sadguru and Self-Realize
By Nova137
Master of Self-Realization: An Ultimate Understanding by Shri Sadguru Siddharameshwar Maharaj available by Sadguru Publishing May 22, 2010.

This work is a translation of words spoken by the Maharaj from November 11, 1934 to December 8, 1935. They contain in Them the fruit of Realization Itself. A disciple of His Grace, Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj, who had the remarkable privilege of recording these Spiritual Discourses of His Holiness, wrote two beautiful Prefaces (one for each of the two Volumes). Nisargadatta's Teachings are immortalized in the Discourses recorded in "I Am That". Also included are the informative "Note from the Editor" (by David Moe); "A Few Words About This Book" (by Satish Avhad); and "Translator's Note" (by D.A. Ghaisas). These three together give the reader a better sense of the rich Advaita history leading to the Spoken Words of His Holiness Shri Siddharameshwar Maharaj. As David writes at the end of his Note: "Jai Sadguru Parabrahman!"

The main text of Master of Self-Realization is made up of three parts. Part I is "Master Key to Self Realization" authored by His Holiness. Master Key is 7 Chapters within 76 pages, that open the book, prepping the reader well for the adventure he or she is about to undertake. Part II is Volume 1 of His Holiness' Discourses that concluded on October 2, 1935. Part III is Volume 2, the first Discourse of this Volume given October 3, 1935 and the last given December 8, 1935. The purity in this work is timeless. A work spoken in 1934 and 1935 might have some monastic and/or patriarchal biases. This work has none. In fact, where one might expect some great principle of "family" being rejected for the monastic mount or monestary, we don't find this at all. Women and family are given proper due. This beautiful set of advaita teachings is so fresh you immediately See its timelessness and eternal wisdom. Like a symphony it repeats the main chorus over and over again, but gently, never forced. The main chorus is: Your Ultimate Nature is the Supreme Self or Paramatman, Pure Brahman. Tat Tvam Asi!

The jiva becomes the aspirant or initiate when he or she somehow, somewhere or sometime decides to take up the spiritual path of awakening to the divine within himself and all life. How long one walks the path is ultimately up to the Self, but the aspirant can reduce the effects of Maya by devotion at the feet of the Sadguru or by being led to an external Guru. Next in an aspirant`s life, the Sadguru becomes the aspirant Who then becomes the Jnani with Self-Knowledge awakening fully to the fact of Atman (Self).

Potential buyer, a supposed jiva who is really the Self, buy this book. If you have no "official" path in this life yet, let this be the first step. There is every chance that you will Realize the Self by the end of your very first reading. If your faith is great and you devote your entire being to His Holiness, It may be possible in one sitting for you to meet your Self. But, it is also possible that The Science of Self-Realization as given in these three parts will come across to you as so simple that you will be in utter denial that It Is So. You will read the words and dream even more dreams of God and Realization. You will continue to imagine Realization and Project what you Think It will Be. If so, you will have to tread on your Path until the Self is given more preeminence in your life as the sole Reality of What You Are. Attempt at all times to think of your Self and nothing else. Do not give even a single thought, projection or moment of your imaginary time to anything else and you will Realize the Self. It is but a matter of time.

Potential buyer, a supposed devotee on His own Path. If you have a detailed Path and have recognized that you have sat at the feet of your inner Guru with the utmost of devotion, then maybe you too will Realize during the reading of this book like Me. Perhaps you are stuck as I was in the Void of the Causal Body and only need a slight tweak in your practices to allow the Self to dissolve you completely and finally enter into the Turya state of the Great Causal Body. Or, perhaps you are a Realized One and by some incredible bit of bad fortune don't know about "Devotion after Liberation". Let His Holiness Shri Sadguru Siddharameshwar Maharaj introduce you to Uddhava's request that Krishna grant Him Devotion after Liberation so that Uddhava would not become like "wood" and could continue to be devoted at the feet of His Beloved Master after Self-Realization. If so, You, too, can definitely benefit from reading this book!

Or, perhaps you are just interested in non-dualism and Its Teachings. Perhaps the dualistic philosophy of traditional religions no longer makes any sense. If so, buy this book and let the simple understanding and teachings on Advaita Vedanta laid bare in It become your True Friend. To do this, though, the content of Master isn't something you just read. This is something that you live, eat and breathe every moment of your life.

How does One come to Realize? Through worshipping at the feet of the Sadguru! If you unfamiliar with what this means buy this book. Briefly, though, this means that you practice the teachings you have been given from within and from without. This starts with all of the principles your mother and father or any good mentor has taught you growing up. The Sadguru, however, is every jiva's inner Guru. Thus, He is with you always. You just need to learn how to let Him speak. Through various practices meant to quiet the jiva's mind, the voice and vision of this inner Guru grows stronger and begins to dominate the jiva's attention. This is Self-Attention of the aspirant on the path.

The path the initiate has been on is of integral importance to the type of attention the initiate will end up giving to the Sadguru. To become an initiate, every jiva must accept some of the common teachings about the jiva: you are conditioned by the world of illusion, time and attachment to shape and form. This attachment is called "ego" which is illusion or "Maya". This Maya is the jiva's mind that thinks the body and the world it inhabits is real. The Sadguru will teach you that your True Nature is Love beyond all transient phenomena. All the suffering that you have ever experienced will be seen for what it truly offers, nothing. His Holiness will convince you of This. He will convince you that to worship at His feet is the Blessings of God and the Source of Life-Energy (Chaitanya). A promise of contentment, peace and blessings without compare will be repeated over and over, sometimes subtlety and sometimes not so subtlety. A promise to go beyond all of your present conceptualizations will be stated clearly and succinctly. For You are greater than any concept, including that of "God". The very concept of "ego" as who you are and "God" as Being separate from you will be so dissolved you'll wonder what those teachings ever offered You!

Finally, This work has many helps to understanding including the Master Key already mentioned as well as many key words in English with their transliterated Sanskrit word in parentheses. This enhances the English speaking aspirant's wonder and excitement all the more, enriching the experience greatly. All of It will help untie the bonds of existence and free You to accept your True State as God Incarnate.

Buy It today.

I AM eternally grateful to the Sadguru. May all Realize the Self. I AM the Self I sought, Sri Sakshat-Paramatman Uddhava Maharaj.

Profound, life-changing, informative--bring your faith to these words
By Picture of a flame
This is esoteric, obviously, so if you are interested in Self-Knowledge, if you are looking to awaken the Buddha within, if you are hoping to awaken Christ Consciousness--obviously these are the terms one has already come to know who is meant to read this text.

Reading I Am That--Nisargadatta Maharaj was essentially my introduction to this book. This is a book containing profound teachings. Whatever I say is only words here, they do fall short of this work. If your search has led you here, drink.

The blessings of the Sadguru be with you.

Fascinating collection of folk beliefs
By Christopher R. Travers
(Originally a review of the original printing, not this facimile.)

This was originally work supporting the author's doctoral thesis in folklore and published in 1915. The work is a catalog of beliefs and superstitions among the Pennsylvania Germans, along with translations in English and comparative sources. For those of us who are interested in folklore, this is quite an interesting collection. The book is well organized and the introduction quite informative. Some of the beliefs have clearly a rational basis while others seem to be a part of the collective folk mentality.

My only complaint is that the author chose to move the sexual beliefs and superstitions out of the book and into a supplement that doesn't seem to be available, though no doubt this was due to the assault on medical textbooks and the like from that era under obscenity laws.

All in all, it's a worthy resource.

An old, somewhat obscure book on superstition
By Dennis Hendrix
Published in 1915, this is one of the older books on the topic of superstitions in America. The book has 2,085 beliefs listed (in both German and English). I find this book particularly interesting because it has a lot of beliefs in it that I've never read anywhere else, and I have many books on this topic. Furthermore, because of it's age I believe it contains beliefs you will not see quoted elsewhere, if anything, books written on the topic of superstition may actually quote this book. All of that said, I imagine that today this little-known book would be of primary interest to folklorists, not the average person.

A guy of her own? She’s not holding her breath—until he steals it away.

Vegas Nights, Book 3

Natalie’s girls-only weekend in Vegas is shot to hell, thanks to her friends ditching her for very sexy, very famous guys. Not that she blames them. She knows what lonely feels like. A nurse’s long hours leave little time for a social life.

Then she collides with and spills her drink all over a very fine, very exposed male chest. A chest belonging to Noah Wilde, lead singer for the infamous Wilde & Wicked rock band. Thankfully, he’s merely amused as she tries to take care of the mess she made.

Noah sure would like to make a mess of the gorgeous, petite lady with luminous blue eyes. There’s no resisting the urge to tempt her along for an adventurous night of gambling, drinking, eating, and sin.

But during the harsh light of day, Noah has a change of heart. Not about the fact he likes Natalie—a lot. He’s not sure he wants to drag this sweet lady through his sordid life. Even though sparing her could cost them both a chance at forever.

Warning: Contains a nurse who thought she knew all there was to know about anatomy, and a rock god who’s about to show her a few spots she missed. To say they both hit the jackpot would be an understatement.

Good Reading
By LAS Reviewer
Natalie wasn’t a one-night-stand kind of gal. But with both her friends otherwise occupied, and hell, they were in Vegas, she decides that spending a few hours with a hot guy is practically mandatory. Deciding to give it a whirl, Natalie is shocked literally speechless when she meets Noah Wilde. The rockstar with the tattoos, leather vest and growly voice. He’s everything she never expected but, for one night in Vegas, Natalie is determined. With Noah by her side and in her bed, she knows she’s in for one seriously wilde night.

This is a gloriously fun “one night in Vegas” style story. I really enjoyed both Natalie and Noah’s characters and found myself drawn in to them both almost immediately. I was a little nervous when I found out how inexperienced Natalie was – all too often “almost virgin” heroines turn annoying and clichéd to my mind – but Ms Erickson did an amazing job with Natalie. I felt she was really well balanced and I thoroughly enjoyed reading the delectable night of passion she shared with Noah.

While the plot itself stuck to the fairly routine formula of a girl’s weekend getting disbanded for hot, sexy flings in Vegas, I enjoyed Natalie and Noah’s characters and interactions enough that I could look past the fact there were no real surprises here for me. I love Vegas stories though, and have to admit this fun read will be just as good upon second – or even third – reading, which is always a positive thing for any book in my mind.

A fun frolic of a story with interesting characters I found myself engaged in. While there shouldn’t be any surprises in the storyline itself, I’d recommend this for any readers wanting a bit of heat and spice in their romance and looking for a fun way to pass the weekend.

Short and sexy
By Adria Reyes
* A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley for the purpose of an honest review.
A girls night only in Vegas sounds like the perfect chance to blow off some steam for Natalie. As a nurse she doesn’t have much time for a personal life, but after her two friends ditch her for two sexy as sin celebrities, Natalie is left feeling lonely, unsure and ready to call it a night but a chance accident has Natalie spilling her drink all over the lead singer of rock band Wilde & Wicked.

Noah Wilde shouldn’t have been amused by the woman who spilled her drink all over him. He’s used to having any woman he wants but something about Natalie calls to him. It isn’t easy tempting Natalie to let go and have a no strings attached night but once Natalie says “yes,” Noah finds himself in over his head and unsure of whether or not he wants to let her go.

Wild Nights takes place within a couple of days, not a whole lot of time for a couple to get to know one another, especially when they both start off with a one night stand in mind. For such a short timeline author Karen Erickson made sure her main characters, Noah and Natalie had a chance to form a connection that would make them want to spend more time together even when their one night was over. Noah and Natalie’s romance wasn’t without its angst and mild conflicts however. Noah’s celebrity lifestyle was the complete opposite of Natalie’s low key existence as a nurse. The two of them had to first want to be with each other bad enough to begin the next step in their whirlwind romance. Not an easy feat to accomplish with such a short amount of time but Erickson managed without losing my interest.

As a whole, Wild Nights was a sexy, uncomplicated read that I enjoyed. It’s one of those stories that you can squeeze in between busy days.

Final Verdict: Apparently I missed a prequel. I must fix this ASAP.

Hot Sexy Short with Rock Star and a Nurse (B Grade)
By Katie Babs
Karen Erickson is a pro at writing hot to trot, steaming one night stands that becomes much more, which is the case of the Vegas Nights series. Wild Nights is the final novella in the trilogy about 3 nurses who live it up in Vegas, and up finding their Prince Charming’s, all of whom are celebrities in sports, acting and rock-n-roll.

Wild Nights is Natalie’s story. She is very much a duck out of water type of woman, who prefers to stay home and isn’t into the social scene. She also has a bit of a self-esteem problem. When her two girl friends go off with their hot studs and leave her at a party, she’s upset, and rightly so. She feels they dumped her to get their freak on with their hot men. But things are on the up and up for Natalie when Noah Wilde, a hot rock star notices her. Noah has toned down his partying. He went to rehab for drinking too much, and isn’t really into the partying scene any more like Natalie. But then he spots her and wants to hang out with her. These two hit it off together and he shows her the sights of Vegas. Noah is such a sweet guy to Natalie, that she takes a big chance with him, and goes to his hotel room. There Noah gives her a hotter than hot night to remember. The sex between these two are smoking hot (some of the best of the trilogy). Natalie and Noah stay together the entire weekend, but then she overhears Noah talking on the phone. He mentions her in a certain way that makes Natalie think her weekend love fest with Noah was the worst mistake of her life.

Wild Nights is a perfect example of what a romance novella should be. Karen has such great skill at making the chemistry between the hero and heroine work. The one downside is, because this is a novella, the ending is rushed in order to get to the HEA in the word count allotted. Like the other two books prior, I felt each book would have been much better if they were longer. That’s the case here with Wild Nights. The miscommunication between Natalie and Noah happens, and then the fix is quick and fast, which is off the page. I wanted to see these two resolve their issues, and not just have it mentioned in passing.

But even with my annoyance at the sudden ending, Wild Nights delivered for me. A hot sexy short!

Why Have Kids?: A New Mom Explores the Truth About Parenting and Happiness, by Jessica Valenti

A provocative and intimate exploration of modern parenthood by “a gutsy young third wave feminist” – The New York Times

If parenting is making Americans unhappy, if it’s impossible to “have it all,” if people don’t have the economic, social, or political structures needed to support parenting, then why do it? And why are anxious new parents flocking to every Tiger Mother and Bébé-raiser for advice on how to raise kids?

In Why Have Kids?, Valenti explores these controversial questions through on-the-ground reporting, startling new research, and her own unique experiences as a mom. She moves beyond the black and white “mommy wars” over natural parenting, discipline, and work-life balance to explore a more nuanced reality: one filled with ambivalence, joy, guilt, and exhaustion. A must read for parents as well as those considering starting a family, Why Have Kids? is an explosive addition to the conversation about modern parenthood.

From the Inside Flap
If parenting is making Americans unhappy, if it’s impossible to “have it all,” if people don’t have the economic, social, or political structures needed to support child rearing, then why do it? And why are anxious new parents flocking to every Tiger Mother and Bébé-raiser for advice on how to raise kids?

In Why Have Kids?, Valenti explores these controversial questions through on-the-ground reporting, startling new research, and her own unique experiences as a mom. She moves beyond the black and white “mommy wars” over natural parenting, discipline, and work-life balance to explore a more nuanced reality: one filled with ambivalence, joy, guilt, and exhaustion.

Would-be parents must navigate the decision to have children amidst a daunting combination of cultural expectations and hard facts. And new parents find themselves struggling to reconcile their elation with the often exhausting, confusing, and expensive business of child care. When researchers for a 2010 Pew study asked parents why they decided to have their first child, nearly 90 percent answered, for “the joy of having children.” Yet nearly every study in the last ten years shows a marked decline in the life satisfaction of those with kids. Valenti explores this disconnect between parents’ hopes and the day-to-day reality of raising children—revealing all the ways mothers and fathers are quietly struggling. A must-read for parents as well as those considering starting a family, Why Have Kids? is an explosive addition to the conversation about modern parenthood.

Bringing sanity back to parenthood
By Bookphile
Though the title of Valenti's book is provocative and sure to inflame, this is not a book that's making an argument against parenting. What this book actually does is take a critical look at the social and cultural constructs surrounding pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting, and break them down piece by piece. Valenti is attempting to open a dialog that is long past due, one that forms a cornerstone of American culture and that has a lot of influenced not only on how successful we are as individuals, but as a culture.

Divided into two parts, Valenti's book takes a look at some things she terms "lies" and others she terms "truth", but her ultimate conclusion is this: we need to have a much more honest dialog about parenting, its challenges and rewards, and what society needs to do to support parents before we can really make any progress, and she is absolutely right about that. The only way we're ever going to progress beyond the wage inequalities, the ridiculous "mommy wars", and the continuing discrimination against parents who are members of a minority is by having an honest and open dialog about how parenting looks in America and how we really want it to look.

I'll start with the "lies" portion of the book. In it, Valenti considers such cultural constructs as "mother knows best", "breast is best", and that having children will "complete" a person. I found this portion of the book so refreshing, because so much of the rhetoric surrounding these kinds of issues reeks of condescension and outright misinformation. It is designed to make women feel badly, to convince women that they ought to chain themselves to home and hearth, ignore their own well-being, and subsume themselves completely, all in the interest of maintaining some impossible standard of perfection. Valenti isn't arguing against breastfeeding or stay-at-home moms--and, as someone who has both breastfed my children and decided to be a stay-at-home mom, neither am I. Instead, what Valenti says--with which I wholeheartedly agree--is that people should be empowered to make the decisions that are best for them and their families. Instead, we currently live in a society that ignores years of scientific research in favor of creating a hostile environment in which women are made to feel inadequate for being unable to live up to an unrealistic image of the uber-mom.

The "truth" section deals with discussion of such issues as the decline of the nuclear family and the rise of women--and men--who are choosing not to have children. We have a sort of cult of the "traditional" family in this country, and Valenti is making an argument for why it's a myth that it's unnatural for people not to want to be parents, or that children who have same sex parents are somehow damaged. Valenti cites a great deal of research to back up her points, and she illuminates the fact that a lot of the misinformation serves as a smoke screen that prevents us from having truly fruitful discussions about what we need to do to improve society, which would improve outcomes for everyone.

Valenti shows how entrenched interests buck against truthful dialog because it doesn't serve them well to have a progressive discussion about the nature of families and parenthood, and how their regressive policies damage all Americans. Rather than mothers banding together to work toward affordable, high-quality child care, the current system encourages women to viciously tear one another apart for the decisions they make about their work/family balance. Rather than Americans demanding more flexibility and better pay from their employers--which would have serious impact on the quality of home life for both parents and children, they can argue about whether or not children are best served by families that observe traditional gender roles.

As I read, I couldn't help but feel like Valenti was helping to bring some sanity back into the world. The bottom line is that most parents dearly love their children and want the best for them. Yet, rather than taking steps to ensure a brighter future for their children, parents are often either bogged down with crippling guilt over their perceived failures or they're busy waging war against one another over the choices they've made.

For my part, I'm with Valenti. Let's talk about what makes Scandinavian countries so successful when it comes to family/work balance and the overall happiness and satisfaction of women. Let's take a look at our broken systems in the United States (health care, education, support for working parents) and figure out what we can do to fix them so that all Americans will have better outcomes, which in turn would lead to better outcomes for our country as a whole.

Kids are not for everyone
By Amazon Customer
I was very eager to read this book. As a woman in my early 30s, I am proudly child-free. I have never wanted kids, I don't plan on having kids, and I am sick and tired of always having to justify my decision to ignorant people who claim that a life without children is empty and meaningless, blah blah blah. I think that every woman should read this book, regardless of if they have kids or not. "Why Have Kids?" is especially interesting because it was written by a woman who is a mother, and yet she does not shy away from proclaiming that being a parent royally sucks for the most part and that it's certainly not for everyone.

This is not an anti-child book by any means. Author Jessica Valenti loves her daughter very much. But she is one of the few mothers on this planet who is willing to point out that parenting is generally not enjoyable, and is also heavily overrated. She blasts the micro-manager mommies out there who flounder to dote upon their children 24/7 without giving the kids a breather or taking any time for themselves. She is all for women working, and she's even more in favor of women and couples who choose not to procreate, because she realizes that it's a very personal decision and also that child-free adults are generally much happier and satisfied with their lives than parents are.

The book also takes on society's view of parenthood and points out that women are basically doomed to fail miserably at motherhood if they attempt to adhere to everything our culture tells us that parents should and should not do. The United States basically does everything it can to make things harder for parents, which is ridiculous. But, in addition to clamoring for reform when it comes to things like maternity leave, etc., Valenti's message also seems to be telling parents, especially mothers, to chill out a little. Nobody is perfect, and nobody will be a perfect parent, and parenthood should never define a woman's entire life.

I wish more people would realize that parenting is a choice, not something all people are somehow obligated to do. I also wish more parents would quit pretending that their jobs are the most challenging and rewarding ones in the whole world and that people without children don't know what it's like, blah blah blah blah blah. I don't have a child, but I have many friends and family members who are raising children. I don't pretend to know how hard it actually is, and I can tell that it's a huge pain in the you-know what (which is one of the reasons I choose not to embark down that road myself). But you know what? Women who don't have kids work hard, too. We have lives, we have responsibilities, and we are probably more fulfilled than a lot of parents out there. Having kids is great, if that's what you want to do. But not having children is pretty freakin' fantastic as well, let me tell you...so stop ragging on all us child-free people and read this book, already.

Do we really need this book?
By Zinnia
Between the title and the blurb, I was hopeful that this book would break some new ground in the ongoing debates around motherhood and child-rearing in America. That perhaps it would break up the tedium of the endless "mommy wars" by discussing some of the less-explored facets of the topic, or taking a unique perspective that had not been already heard in hundreds of variations, from the New York Times to parenting forums to the playground, in the last 15 years or so. In the past few years, especially, the flow of controversial books on the role of mothers and "parenting" has seemed relentless. Yet for all the creative ways publishers have found to market these books (You're Doing Parenting Wrong: Feminist Edition; You're Doing Parenting Wrong: How the French are Better than you; You're Doing Parenting Wrong: Fear the Chinese Mothers!) they all boil down to the same several arguments rehashed again and again. Did Valenti, best known as founder of the "third wave" feminist blog Feministing, find a new facet to explore, or best of all, a bold and better alternative path?

Sadly, the answer is no. Rather, this book reads as a kind of summary of all the ground that has been covered exhaustively by others. It is a brief, shallow book, with a timid thesis and many half-hearted supporting anecdotes. There is, of course, the usual belching up of statistics that one expects from any nonfiction book of this type anymore. But they do not fold into the body of the book in a meaningful way, but rather wash over the reader in a bland way like the reading of a stock report on NPR. The whole book seems rushed and tentative, and reads like an overly long blog post rather than a finished opus. The anecdotes are not written up in a way to hook the reader in. Many conclusions are reached by way of contested or unsupported "facts" and assumptions, Valenti does not "show her work" as you would expect in a typical nonfiction work. The whole thing is neither a sold well-researched work of nonfiction argumentation, nor a personal opinion or account that coheres as a story for its own sake. I was left wondering why she wrote the book, as she does not seem particularly informed nor particularly passionate about the topic. A curious fact is mentioned in one anecdote, that she had an editor for this book on motherhood while she was still pregnant with her first child. The book is then, perhaps a contractual obligation and material opportunity more than a labor of love or political conviction.

I should have known I was in for a disappointment even in the preface, as only a page or two into the book comes the first "Mad Men" reference, tossed out casually and offhand, a kind of dogwhistle letting us know that this book is by and for a very specific demographic. This is yet another volume about the neuroses of the chattering classes, dressed up as a work of general interest. This is a book calculated to sell itself, and then self-destruct in admitted irrelevance. Valenti got to write this book because she's Valenti, she was known to a publisher and an audience, and it was thought that a book on motherhood by her would be marketable to that niche. But the truth of the matter is, we did not need her book. What we need is a book by someone else--lots of someone elses, really--who is not part of this upper crust coastal elite set, mostly based in Manhattan, who dominate the discourse on parenthood and everything else in this country. I will give Valenti credit, at least, for nodding here and there in the book to the fact that the "debate" she is entering into is a rarefied and elitist one, that all too often columnists from the Times or the Post sit down to hash out "what's wrong with parenting" and "what should mothers do" and really they are only talking about the parenting of the economic top 10% and the mothers who are elite professionals with many options available to them. But we don't need or want to hear wealthy white women concede, with liberal guilt, that the discourse leaves out the rest of us, or to allow for our existence with a token nod and a bone thrown out in a passing paragraph or anecdote. We need to be included in the conversation, for the good of all. They can wring their hands that we need more daycare options, or work flexibility, or parental leave, they are very good at such hand-wringing. But has it ever yet changed a thing for the practical conditions of actual mothers outside their elite social circles?

In fact it comes across as condescending and a bit frustrating when Valenti nods at us, saying that the debate about staying at home versus working is different for women whose jobs are low-paying and not particularly "intellectually stimulating," and then proceeds to continue right on into that same hackneyed old "debate" and take a hackneyed side in it. Women should work, she says, as it's not good to be economically dependent on another. What of the fact that work at a living wage is increasingly not available? That student debt chokes the aspirations of the middle class? That working class women may have to leave their children not in a posh Mandarin immersion preschool, and not a not-optimal daycare, but one that is actually miserable and insufficient? All in order to work a miserable job that barely pays for daycare and electricity, as if to add insult to injury. She wrings her hands--the specialty of the chattering classes--about what would happen if "more and more" women became stay-at-home-moms, and how that would sabotage the plight of "women" (professional women) as a class. But there is no in-depth examination of this thought, and there is no in-depth exploration of alternatives. She tosses out some thoughts, and then sort of shrugs, and the book ends.

The only chapter that really brought anything new and of interest to the table was the one about imprisoning bad mothers. The anecdotes were interesting, and here Valenti may have actually found something to discuss that has not been beaten to death already. But alas it is like all the chapters in the work, a slim and fleeting blog post, and it is over before she has a chance to really look at any of the ideas in depth.

You will miss nothing important, no new contribution to the already nauseating and tiresome referendums on "how mothering should be done, seen, and felt about" if you skip this book. Which is really too bad.
